Port Glasgow shipbuilders open new social club (1950)
There is a gymnasium and dining room open all day to serve snacks, and an interesting feature of the Club are the rooms reserved for female members and members' wives, which contain two electric sewing machines for them to use.
Last night the Club was formally opened by Lady Lithgow. She wished the club good luck and said that a club is not so much a matter of buildings, but of human relationships.
There can be very good clubs in bad buildings and very bad clubs in good ones.
Lady Lithgow conveyed the good wishes of Sir James, who, she said, together with his brother, the late Mr Henry Lithgow, had always been very ambitious that the firm should have a clubhouse which was a pleasure to see and a pleasure to be in.
The welfare and happiness of the company's employees had always been a concern for Sir James, as he was a born dockman and had spent the best years of his life there.
He really wanted the Club to grow because the people on the yards wanted it and worked for it, and not as a social benefit donated by the employers.
“It has always been his idea,” said Lady Lithgow, “that we should respect each other's spare time, and just as you are partners in doing an enormously good job for yourselves and for your country in the yards, so should you do in your spare time, employers”
One of the original members of the Lithgow Club, when it was known as the Kingston Welfare Club, founded in 1942, Mr Robert M'Lean, described its growth from that time, when there were only 24 members, to the current time, when the membership number was approaching 1,000.
Lady Lithgow was presented with a box by Mrs Rene Pollock with a brief history of the Club on one side and a map of the new Club building on the other.
