'Nothing learned from Bairstow's mistake' – Tom Curran called back for 'Spirit Of Cricket' after bizarre run out | ILT20

Tom Curran was given a reprieve while batting in the ILT20 on Saturday (January 25), as leader of the opposition Nicholas Pooran called him back after a run to adhere to the “Spirit of Cricket”.

Curran batted for Gulf Giants against Pooran's MI Emirates in the 19th match of this season, scoring 152 after Tom Banton top scored for MIE with 56 in the first innings.

With 18 runs needed from 13 balls, Mark Adair hit a full toss from Alzarri Joseph to long-off. The batters ground through for a single as Curran ran to the striker's end.

He arrived at the crease comfortably, before immediately tapping his bat on the ground twice and leaving his ground as the throw from deep came in to wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran. Pooran took off the bails and appealed to Curran to run out, but the batsman seemed bewildered by the appeal, possibly because it was the last ball of the over, and he went to the middle of the field to meet with his partner talk. However, neither referee called 'over'.

Discussions took place between the field officials before the appeal was referred to the third umpire, who ruled out Curran. However, as he started to leave the field, Gulf Giants head coach Andy Flower asked Curran to wait, and he appeared to protest the decision at the boundary.

After a few seconds of Flower's dissent, the appeal was presumably withdrawn by Pooran as Curran was allowed to return to the crease and continue batting. He was eventually dismissed on the penultimate ball of the innings, before Zuhaib Zubair completed the chase and took the Giants to victory.

After the match Pooran said: “[It was a] difficult today. Not enough discipline with the bat and ball. Called him (Curran) back in the spirit of the game.

“We didn't respect the game, the opponent and our plans enough. If we keep making the same mistakes it will cost us money. Hopefully we will try to think and pick ourselves up. It is certainly frustrating, but we have to keep our emotions under control.”

What do the laws say?

According to article 20.1.1.1 of the MCC's rules“The ball becomes dead when it finally lands in the hands of the wicketkeeper or the bowler.”

Furthermore, according to Article 20.1.2, “the ball shall be deemed dead when it is apparent to the bowler's end umpire that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket no longer consider the ball to be in play.”

When Curran had left his ground the ball was not dead as it was heading towards the wicketkeeper from the outfield. Furthermore, the fielding side's appeal meant that it could not have been clear to the referee that they “no longer considered it to be in play”.

The incident was reminiscent of the now infamous run out by Jonny Bairstow during the 2023 Asheswho had also left his crease before the ball was dead, was stomped by Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
