Lonnie M. 25 leads Browning Table Tennis to new heights – Grytte
Lonnie M. doesn't just play table tennis, he dominates it. With a record of 43-0 in his first high school career as a Browning athlete, the undefeated senior isn't done yet.
Lonnie started playing table tennis in first grade at the age of seven. Today, he currently practices at the Gold Coast Table Tennis Center in Port Washington, Long Island. With countless training sessions each year, Lonnie is no stranger to this sport.
The Browning School Varsity Table Tennis Team is coming off a 3-2 win against Fieldston on Friday, January 10. Browning defended the Browning Kurani Gym and held on to close matches to secure the win.
With an 8-1 record, the Varsity team leads the league. Notable wins include two 5-0 wins against Lman Manhattan Preparatory School, two 4-1 wins against Lyce Franais De New York and a 3-2 win against Calhoun. Regardless of the score, Lonnie always keeps his preparation consistent and finds happiness in what he is good at:
I am the captain of my own ship. There will be ups and downs, but at the end of the day, I find joy in what you do, and the rest will take care of itself, said Lonnie M. 25.
Lonnie's leadership often includes coaching the players mid-match, calming them down and going over the game plan for each match. Lonnie encourages players to look for the opponent's weaknesses, even playing against his teammates to build on their strengths.
Lonnie's record undermines his talent. When you watch him play, he doesn't just win, he takes over and wins almost every game by a wide margin, James C. 25 said.
Although table tennis is played individually, its competitive format makes it a team game. During Lonnie's first and second seasons, the team lost almost every game, despite attempts to make minor adjustments to solve the problem. Now they are almost unbeatable.
With a dream to win a championship and further cement his legacy at school, Lonnie comes to every practice with passion and determination. No matter what happens, he will find a way to win.
