UCLA women's tennis beats Washington to earn spot in ITA Indoor Championships
Coach Stella Sampras Websters' team came up with a recipe during Saturday's battle.
The ingredients they added to the mix were adversity, chemistry and calm.
No. 6 UCLA women's tennis (2-0) defeated Washington (1-1) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the help of their latest addition to their cookbook, the Bruins earned their first trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships since 2021.
It's the best we've played so far and that's really exciting, said Sampras Webster. Everyone wanted this so badly.
In doubles, the Bruins developed the basis of their recipe.
Sophomore Ahmani Guichard and junior Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer defeated Catherine Gagnon and McKenna Koenig of Washington 6-0.
Ahmani and I like to play together, Lutkemeyer said. We're best friends off the field, so playing together is the best thing and we have really good chemistry on the field.
Freshmen No. 4 Kate Fakih and Olivia Center defeated No. 115 Sophie Luescher and Erika Matsuda 6-3 to secure the doubles point for the Bruins.
It's amazing that we have really good chemistry, and we've known each other since we were 10, Fakih said. We are just good on the field.
On the way to singles it was time to implement the recipe.
With a forehand down the line, Center defeated No. 104 Carina Syrtveit 6-1, 6-2. For the second time in a row this season, the UCLA freshman earned the second point of the game.
On court two, No. 38 Lutkemeyer fought back from a 4-2 deficit to capture the first frame against Reece Carter of No. 121 Washington. She dropped only one game in the second set and came up with the ingredients to finish 7-5 and 6-1.
Lutkemeyer said composure helped her adjust as the match progressed.
For me, it means continuing to understand that momentum shifts are just part of tennis, Lutkemeyer said. I won't always go up, and I won't always go down.
The final step was serving the dish on a platter.
With a ball to the net, No. 41 defeated Fakih Koenig 6-3, 6-4 to earn the Bruins' fourth point of the day.
For Fakih, the victory marked a personal goal.
We've never made it (ITA Indoor Championships) in the years the seniors have been here, Fakih said. I wanted to do it for them, I wanted to contribute to making it for them.
Next, UCLA travels north on Saturday to take on California before taking its talents to the ITA Indoor Championships, which begin on February 7 in Evanston, Illinois and Urbana, Illinois.
