Say no to chaos: China's national table tennis team disbands fan clubs amid crackdown on toxic fandom
SINGAPORE: China's national table tennis team has decided to disband all official fan clubs of its athletes on social media to curb toxic fandom, highlighting an issue that has emerged not only in sports but also in the entertainment sector.
The Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA) and the country's national team unanimously decided on the move, citing the negative impact of such fan circles on the sport, local news site China Sport Daily reported on Saturday (Jan 25).
According to the association, fans have torn each other apart, provoking fights and confrontations, committing insults and slander, and spreading rumors and attacks.
Such aggressive behavior has seriously deviated from the original intent of sport and caused a bad social impact, CTTA said.
The Internet is not a lawless place, the association further noted. We must respect (the) coaches, athletes and referees. We should not do what we want under the guise of support and love.
CTTA's statement does not mention specific cases. However, it comes after several Chinese rowers complained about overzealous fans and also follows several high-profile incidents at last year's Paris Olympics.
Chinese table tennis star Wang Chuqin was surrounded by fans at Beijing Capital Airport on December 28, local news channel China Daily reported on January 15. Cameras were stuck in his face and the situation made him visibly frustrated, the report said.
His compatriot and fellow star sailor Fan Zhendong posted a video on microblogging site Weibo on December 15, showing crowds of supporters surrounding an elevator trying to take photos and videos of him.

The 28-year-old previously told state broadcaster CCTV that he had been harmed by the fan culture, which also undermined the solidarity of national teams, state television Global Times reported in August last year.
Another notable incident of misbehaving fans occurred when world No. 1 Sun Yingsha lost to her Chinese compatriot Chen Meng at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
