Togo aims to play its best tennis against India in the Davis Cup

The Togo team arrived without much fanfare for the Davis Cup World Group play-off match at the DLTA Complex. The players may not have an impressive world ranking to brag about, but once they hit the hard court for a training stint, they showed they could hit the ball as well as anyone.
Strong and athletic, Togolese stars Thomas Setodji, Liova Ajavon and Mlapa Akomlo were quite fluid in their play and very impressive with the intensity of their training, led by captain Alisama Agnamba.
Togo Tennis Federation President Mawuli Ahialey expressed his delight over his visit to India for the Davis Cup. He hoped for a big crowd for the tie on February 1 and 2, even if they are all Indian fans, so that Togo could showcase his African style of play.
We know that India is a strong team and has a rich history in the Davis Cup, having reached the World Group final a few times. Our players are not professional tennis players, but teach and coach tennis. One of our players is coming from the US tonight. We will try to play our best, Ahialey said.
Although Togo had participated in the Davis Cup in 1990, it disappeared from the circuit after 2003 until returning to the Tennis World Cup in 2022.
Remarkably, upon their return, Togo won 10 of 11 matches and this time reached the World Group play-off, after beating Latvia (4-0) and Indonesia (3-2).
Thomas Setodji is the main player and the only player with a world ranking, a modest 1258 in singles and 1688 in doubles.
Understandably, the Togo squad was keen to play on hard courts, which figuratively speaking provides a level playing field for both teams.
The Indian team performed its task efficiently with Ramkumar Ramanathan, S. Mukund and Karan Singh sharpening their singles skills while Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Bollipalli played doubles against a few combinations of players on different courts including the center court.
Aryan Shah, Yuvan Nandal and Chirag Duhan were heavily involved in the team's preparation, and coach Ashutosh Singh made optimal use of resources and available courts, leaving captain Rohit Rajpal to take on numerous responsibilities as host.
The bright sunshine was welcome for both teams as they tried to work up a sweat in the pleasant conditions.
Speaking to the media, veteran Ramkumar Ramanathan, who was ranked a career-best 111 in 2018, assured that the Indian team would not underestimate Togo and would take the challenge one rubber at a time.
