1996 Molade Okoya-Thomas Cup Champion, Maya reflects at the end of Atandas Reign
Taofik Maya, the 1996 Mens Singles champion of the prestigious Molade Okoya-Thomas Table Tennis Championships, has thought about his historical victory and revives the memories of overcoming the long-term dominance of table tennis legend Atanda Musa.
Maya, now 63, shared his journey during the championship, which he started as a cadet in the 1980s. He remembered how the tournament was the career of many Nigerian table tennis players and how Musa Atanda and the late Yomi Bankole were the titans of the competition for years.
Most of us who represented Nigeria cannot forget the impact of the tournaments on our career. At the time, it was just like the Olympic Games of table tennis, with legends such as Atanda Musa, the late Yomi Bankole, and Wole Ouffotan, Maya said.

Maya emphasized his progression, from competing as a cadet to making the Lagos State team for the National Sports Festival 1981 in Bendel, which he won. Despite repeated attempts, his bravery collapsed at Musa and Bankoles Dominance.
In 1996, with Musa who had left the country, I grabbed the chance. I defeated Bankole in the semi -final and then triumphed Aiyemojuba in the final to win my first senior title, he said.
