  • Terry Braverman, the old voice of the athletics of Michigan State University, died at the age of 86.
  • Braverman served as a announcer for MSU football from 2001 to 2021 and was known for his slogan: “It's a beautiful day for football!”
  • In addition to his announcement tasks, Braverman was also a successful fundraising for the university, which led the fundraising of the athletic department for more than two decades.

East Lansing A thriving voice for football and basketball matches, the Michigan State University -broadcaster Terry Braverman, 86, also stimulated the school behind the scenes for generations as a leading fundraising.

He died on Thursday after fighting multiple myeloma, a kind of cancer, said his son Chris Braverman.

Braverman spent decades as the most important athletics fund of the university, leading the Ralph Young Fund from 1974 to 2002. It was later renamed the Spartan Fund and currently supports more than 700 student athletes.

Braverman almost went to the big microphone on an accident in 2001 and took over as the public address announcer of the Spartan Stadium when the regular announcer was sick. He served as the voice of MSU football until 2021.

The first game of Braverman as a PA-announcer is now remembered as one of the most intense between In-State Rivals University of Michigan and MSU, which comes down to a final second.

Paul Schager is the MSU Athletics senior adviser who helped to arrange Braverman to temporarily board in 2001.

“He pulled a Lou Hrig,” said Schager, referring to one New York Yankees First Honkman, Wally Pipp, who stopped for a single match in 1925 to continue his replacement, Gehrig, non-stop for a record-breaking almost 14 years.

“It's a great day for football!”

The expression Terry Braverman was known for – “It is a beautiful day for football! – happened organic, said Schager and Chris Braverman.

Chris is one of Terry's three children and served as the binoculars of his father's spotter in the PA stand for all MSU games.

Terry Braverman drove around a beautiful day, on a beautiful day, but it was the next game that confirmed the slogan, his son said.

Chris Braverman and Schager do not remember the exact game, it might have been around 2005, but it was certainly less than ideal weather, they both remembered.

“He started it on one of the more bad weather days,” Schager said.

“It wasn't beautiful,” said Chris Braverman. The team was not doing well and the audience did not seem to feel the game, he said.

Terry Braverman, who always had a talent for reading a room, brought his normal high energy to the script prediction, brought by Farm Bureau Insurance and has adjusted the script again and said: “It's a wonderful day for football.”

“There was a very loud reaction from the crowd,” said the younger Braverman, adding that the reaction was so great that he even thought the sentence would catch on at the immediate moment.

It did, and Braverman's voice has since been used not only for MSU atletiek, but also in a National Big 10 commercial.

“If he says so, there is a bond that everyone in the stadium has, as if they were immediately connected,” said Chris Braverman. “We have all surprised about it over the years. It has become an honorary sign for MSU.”

When Braverman left the stand, Schager said that there were conversations about whether or not to keep the announcements “Beautiful Day”.

The expression “Beautiful Day for Football” is now a solid part of the MSU Stadium experience.

“Those who do the PA will do that as part of the script message to the fans,” said Schager.

Braverman was a Bozo before he became MSU's Chief Booster

Braverman started early as a journalist. He was chosen as editor-in-chief of the Keyhole newspaper of his Muskegon High in 1956, according to a Muskegon Chronicle story from that year. After graduating from MSU in 1960, Braverman spent years as a sports journalist in Hawaii, Nebraska, Traverse City and FT. Wayne, Indiana.

He also spent a year as a television “Bozo the Clown” in Traverse City and always remembered his time in face, his son said. It absolutely fits with the extrovert and positive personality of his father and probably came about because his father would be willing to help in any way, he said.

Bravers began to broadcast Spartan football and basketball in the mid -1970s as a sports reporter at WKAR, where he was one of the first to use wireless headsets to talk.

It was high -tech. We were one of the first stations to use wireless technology, “Braverman told the State Journal, for a story from 2023 about the 100th anniversary of the station.” I was wearing a three-foot long thread that was attached to my headset. It was primitive but also innovative. (At the time MSU president John) Hannah realized that sports were important. He felt that they would bring money and prestige to Wkar.

Braverman then started the Ralph Young Fund and led athletic fundraising for the university. He was the first director to take the athletic fundraising a year a year, which took place in the early 1980s.

He lovingly remembered his Wkar days.

You are immersed in your work and you forget that you are putting history, “he said.” I knew how good Wkar was. We had financing, we had innovation and we had beautiful broadcasters. We didn't know how good we had it.

Braverman was also tapped as a PA broadcaster for the Detroit Lions, from about 2005 to 2018, a performance that probably came from his work as a PA broadcaster at Motor City Bowl matches that were held in Ford Field, his son said.

He did community theater and loved desserts. Lemon Meringue was a favorite, but that was just about everything else from the moment the dinner was ready, his son said.

Braverman said that his father's legacy starts with his family, including his wife Gail Mackay Braverman. The couple met on MSU and married in 1973, remained together until his death. They moved to Florida a few years ago, with frequent trips to their beloved Canadian hut, and many visits with his ten great -grandchildren, said Chris Braverman.

When Braverman returned to the PA stand for a game from 2021, he gave the stadium they wanted again: “Always remember when you are at Spartan Stadium on football games,” he said, pausing to chew and digest every word, “it's a beautiful day for football.”
