Table tennis tournament starts senior games

There is a scene in the film Forrest Gump that excels the titular Gump in Ping-Pong. His visit to China reflects what is known as ping-pong diplomacy, a period in the 1970s in which tensions between China and the United States were reduced by table tennis competitions between the two countries.
While the recent table tennis tournament in Mesquite did not tackle international relations, the same spirit of goodwill was present during the event – part of the annual Mesquite Senior Games.

The senior games started in 2001 and offered a casual competition for the senior population. On Saturday, March 8, in the Mesquite Recreation Center, seniors in the age of 61-83 gathered in front of the table tennis tournament. Although this year it was a small group of four men and four women, the enthusiasm of the participants filled the room.

Marge Mongolo, the event director for a year, said in an interview that most participants are tribal guests. They keep coming back because they enjoy it so much. I only wish we had more participants from the community.

For five hours, participants competed against each other and completed seven rounds of competitions in the run-up to the semi-finalistic competitions and the last match.
Dan Brown, 82 years old, is the president of the Utah Table Tennis Club, who has been around for nine years. Bruce Barkoff, who practices six days a week, shared his experiences with Neuropong, a program made to help people with multiple sclerosis and Parkinsons. His wife, Karen, explained that the sport slows down some symptoms of the neurological disorders. Some people even appear in wheelchairs and walkers to participate in the competitions.

This week Utahs Park and Recreation Association Neurong called the program of the year.

The Huntsman World Senior Games, which will be held in St. George every year in October, announced last year that Neuropong would become a category in the competitions. Julianna de Batz, a former sea captain, is one of the coaches for this program, which has chapters in Colorado and extends its facilities to include more research -based studies on the effects of table tennis on attention and other cognitive factors.

Table tennis is an excellent sport for seniors, because it strengthens muscles and joints and improves hand-eye coordination.

The winners of this year's men's competition were Steven Nelson, Gold; Louis Krupnick, Silver and Dan Brown, Bronze.

The winners of the women's competition were Renae Willer, Gold; Julianna de Batz, Silver and Jan Brown, Bronze.
