Waddup and arrange 'best' Cippenham team 1*

The 18th annual Running of the Cippenham Team 1* Open on Sunday was the best ever, according to organizer Graham Trimming.

This competition, conceived by Cippenham TTC, offers teams of two instead of individual players and, after the preliminary round groups, has a progressive knockout format that produces a definitive ranking of all 24 teams.

All four teams placed achieved their provisional round groups in first place, although lobsters had a decision maker against Erith TTC, but that match won 2-1 thanks to a brace from Ho Yin Tam.

The only of the eight top teams that their group failed was even the father and son Duo Radovan and Branislav Zivkovic who succumbed to the Titans, represented by Craig Brown and Matthew Horrocks. Both teams, however, succeeded in navigating a route to the top eight with Zivkovics that eventually finished one place higher than Titans in sixth place after he had hit the top-night in the Smashers in round two.

Surprise of the day was the successful run of the Pong Fathers. With neither players, Nick Howard nor Adrian Piotrowski, on the National Mens Ranking List they finished second in their group to the A-Team and then went to a series of victories on the Underdogs (Luke Rickett & Connor Wood) and the Dynamic Duo (Maran-Alexandru of Marenisandru) quarterfinals.

Then they defeated Titans and Zivkovics to finish in a deserving fifth place. The dynamic duo ended in the 11th, despite the fact that the Anghel remained unbeaten during the day.

The semi -final were played between four of the top five ranked teams. The losers of the semi -final played for positions three and four and that resulted in the victory for the A -Team (Adam Jepson and Adam Gigli), about Isle of Wight (Paul Rainford and Ryan Cates), in a repeat of the result of their earlier game in De Ronde. This meant a personal success for Jepson, the highest ranked individual player in the competition, who was one of the four players who remained unbeaten all day.

The other two undefeated players could be seen in teams that met in the final. This match was a long and exciting affair that was won by Kidlington TTC thanks to victories for James Rule and Lewis Waddup about Chun Yu Chan. This was after Hkers, whose name referred to the Hong Kong heritage of their players, had taken a 1-0 lead after Lok Yee Lo, once ranked in the top 350 women in the world, defeated Waddup. Lo was the other player who won all her matches during the day.

From the Cippenham contingent of players in the draw, Maciej Dlugozima was the most successful individual with six wins from his nine games, while the highest placed team hit Backspin, in the 10th position, with the youngsters Louis Alexander and Bharath Prasanna Kumar.
