Julian Alvarezs Two-Touch Penalty and why football tiles need rules to reconsider

Steve McManamans commentary on TNT -Sport echoed the feeling of many neutral observers, because Atletico Madrids Champions League hopes to wilt the most astonishing and dramatic conditions on Wednesday.

There are many painful ways to lose a European draw against your bitter rivals, but this had to be one of the worst.

The VAR system (of course it was) became the protagonist when the video referee excluded the penalty of Atletico Julian Alvarezs in the shootout that followed a tense last-16 second stage against Real Madrid.

It was considered that Alvarez's left foot made contact with the ball while he scored a shot with his right, and referee Szymon Marciniak gives the fine with double tap.

Repeatedly viewing the incident does not make it clear.

Perhaps the Real Madrid players who gestured that there had been a violation and then protested, the superhuman eyesight, or perhaps they tried to slide their happiness Alvarez, but the VAR and non-Ball technology confirmed a violation of the rule.

Yes, Alvarez had fallen, but it is unlikely that everyone could have seen a convincing double touch in real time while he hit the ball.

But due to the most tiny measure, the Vars supervision saw a law infringement, and it was both correct (probably) and decisive when Real started to win the shootout and progress to the quarterfinals.

This does not want to suggest that the VAR or UEFA has been pecking in one way or another. The rules have been followed as much as possible. But a rule that does not allow the spot kick feels overly cruel. The player must at least be allowed to take the fine again.

Perhaps it can be like a beneficial lesson for other penalty customers. Only Alvarez and the Athletico-Kit team will know if he was wearing the optimum boots for a shootout, but with fields often watered in front and during rest, there can be logic to change in grippier shoes for shootouts.

For now, however, the Reals Death grip on the knockout phase of the Champions League will continue to exist, and honest fans can only sympathize with Alvarez and the home supporters in the Estadio Metropolitano who will never forget the way they left.
