Umaine beats Umass Lowell 7-1 in Hockey East Semifinals

Orono, Maine, Mens Hockey Team of the University of Maines, returns to the Hockey East Semifinals for the second consecutive season.

The second placed black bears, ranked in fourth place in one national poll and fifth in the other, received goals from seven players, including goals of the second period by second-year left wing Sully Scholle, second-year defender Frank Djurasevic and Graduate Student Center Lyven Brein on the way to Sea Final Farytalyyte Quarterfinalfinalfinalfinal Farstyyte Quarterfinalfinal Farthernfinalfinal Umass Lowell at a Somfond Arena on Saturday evening.

The seven goals are the most scored by the Black Bears in a match this season.

The power of our team is our depth and I thought everyone was popping up tonight, said Umaine head coach Ben Barr.

Scholle said that the team played a great game against the River Hawks on Saturday evening.

We played very well and defensively. The boys just buzzed there, Scholle said.

Junior left wing Thomas Freel, senior center Harrison Scott, second -year right wing Josh Nadeau and graduate student on the right Ross Mitton all scored in the third period for the Black Bears.

Graduated student defender Nick Anderson scored in the third period for Umass Lowell to bring 4-1 at the time.

Umaine surpassing Umass Lowell 42-28.

Black Bear Sophomore goalie Albin Boija ended with 27 Saves and Umass Lowell -graduated student Henry Welsch ended with 35.

Umaine is now 22-7-6 and plays on Thursday at 7.30 pm in the semi-final in TD Garden in Boston. Umaine records the ninth seed in Northeastern, who shocked the top seeds of Boston College with 3-1, and fourth seed will compete against the third seed Boston University. The Boston University-catch competition is Thursday at 4 p.m.

Friday final is at 7:30 PM.

Umass Lowell ended 16-16-4.

The River Hawks had a golden chance to break a scoreless draw when Umaine Junior defender Brandon Chabrier was assessed a major five minutes and misconduct for the butt with 27 seconds in the first period.

Umaine killed the latter 27 seconds and more than a minute in the second period before Umass Lowell was called for interference.

That posted the two teams that played four-on-four and 1:19 Later, Umass Lowells Mirko Buttazzoni received a high stuck minor.

Breen expanded the leadership with 4:29 in the period in which he was nicely set up by Charlie Russell.

Russell was behind the net and Breen timed his pass from the top of the fold in Off the far post for his sixth goal and only since he returned six games ago from a broken leg.

Freel expanded the lead to 4-0 less than two minutes in the third period when he lifted a David Breazeal Pass in the net of a two-on-one before his 11th of the season.

Anderson answered 6:17 later by shooting a loose puck home for his second of the season. But Scott found the upper short side corner of a two-on-one before he was 17; Nadeau scored his ninth of a Bodie Nobes -Rebound and Mitton noted his fourth with a wrist from the right faceoff circle.

It was Mitton's first game back after having sustained five games ago.

We played a fairly complete game, said Barr. It became a bit Dicey with the five -minute major, but we clearly got through it. We were lucky that they took [two minor penalties] And then took a five so that things changed.

The kill gave us a lot of juice and led good things to happen for us, Barr added.

It was the first time that Umaine had seven different goal scorers on January 16, 2019 since a 7-2 victory over Boston College. Thirteen black bears registered at least a goal or an assist.

Barr praised the effort that was returned by the five remaining defenders after Chabrier had been thrown out of the game.

They were great. It is long to go with five d and they really did well, said Barr.

Breen said that the black bears have a great emphasis on every man and things can go wrong if a player or two has a 'night.

But we have made fast adjustments, learned from our mistakes and kept the pressure on them all night, which was great, said Breen. He thought it was a total team effort.

We are good enough today and the other team was, said Umass Lowell -Coach Standard Bazin, who lost a second -year center Jak sailing to a shoulder injury early in the first period and was up to 10 attackers after Truman was cast out of the competition.
