94-year-old table tennis player celebrates the 20th birthday of Corpus Christi Table Tennis Group
The youngest person in the group is 25 and the oldest is 94. It was originally founded in the Ethel Eyerly Senior Center.
Corpus Christi, Texas, many sports are too physically demanding for athletes to keep playing once they have reached a certain age.
Table tennis is an exception and a local group celebrates twenty years that they play the sport together.
The Corpus Christi Table Tennis Group held its 20th birthday in the Ethel Eyerly Senior Center, where it was originally founded, on Friday. The youngest person in the group is 25 and the oldest is 94.
Group founder Doc Cannedy came from California to Texas with his daughter and son -in -law. It all started when they found a place where they could practice together.
“We only had 3 people. We had my daughter, my son -in -law and one table, and we just continued to invite people, invite people. Finally, it built up where if everyone were here would have about 40 people,” Canedy said.
At least twenty -six players were there on Friday. Cannedy said that people initially came for the exercise, then they wanted to compete and eventually invited others.
He taught everyone to play as if they were in a tournament, including group members who became national champions. One of them is the 94-year-old Doris Schultz.
“To be my age and to come to the center and get up in the morning and playing table tennis was just very nice,” said Schultz.
Schultz has been playing table tennis for the past twelve years. She said she met a lot of people during tournaments and she got to know while she stayed in contact. She added that she hopes that the group will continue to play because everyone is friendly and enjoys the game.
