PTPA: Union 'Tennis Players' begging to ATP Tour against ATP
The Professional Tennis Players' Association (PTPA) is looking for a judicial order to prevent the ATP tour that deals with “incorrect, coercion or threatening communication” with players.
The association claims that the ATP tried to put pressure on players to sign in advance prepared statements that say that they had no prior knowledge of the legal steps launched by the PTPA this week.
De Union, which was co-founded by 24-way large winner Novak Djokovic, quoted “anti-competitive practices and a flagrant contempt for player welfare” in court cases that were filed on Tuesday.
Djokovic is not one of the players mentioned as the plaintiff in the official judicial documents, but said publicly on the Miami Open Thursday that there are elements of the lawsuit with which he agrees, and some with which he doesn't.
The Serbian said: “I have seen some changes, but there are some fundamental changes that still have to be made and I really hope that all administrative bodies, including PTPA, will come together and solve these problems.”
The PTPA, “on behalf of the entire player population”, takes action against the Men's ATP Tour, the Women's WTA Tour, the International Tennis Federation and the International Tennis Integrity Agency in the US, the VK and the European Union.
Nick Kyrgios in Australia is the most controversial player called as the claimant next to the PTPA.
In Papers who were submitted late on Friday to the court of the United States in New York, lawyers asked for the PTPA judge Margaret Garnett to issue an order that prevents all four defendants from communicating with players about their involvement in the trial.
The motion accuses the ATP of threatening to reduce prize money and pension contributions to compensate for legal costs it arises to combat the case. It argues that this is “flagrant interference” with the jurisdiction of the court.
