Umaine Hockey fans change Boston Arena in Alfond South
Members of the Hockey team of the University of Maine Mens continue to say that the Black Bear Faithful are the best fans in hockey.
And the fans continue to prove their point.
Last weekend Umaine started his Hockey East Playoff campaign with a home game in the Alfond Arena in Orono, and the fans showed up with a sold-out audience. The team responded with a 7-1 attacking outpouring to skate past Umass-Lowell.
This week Umaine fans swung the TD garden in Boston for the Hockey East Semifinals and Championship Game. So much so that it almost felt like they brought a home advantage with them.
It feels like a home game, Umaine Fan Megan Arsenault said from the stadium on Friday evening and noted that the majority of people in the garden seemed to be Umaine fans. I know that people have called the Alfond South, it is certain.
The Black Bears rewarded their fans with two victories in two nights, and the schools first hockey East Conference Championship since 2004.
Both players and TV broadcasters wondered about the show of Umaine fans for the championship game.
“These are the best fans in college hockey. It is incredible, Umaine Co-caption Lynden Breen told Nesn after the victory. It feels like every time we are on the road, we have home ice cream. There is nothing to play for the University of Maine. I am a black bear forever.
The same applies to the black bears in the stands.
Arsenault, who was reached by telephone during the second break on Friday evening, estimated that about 60 to 70 percent of fans in the Arena Umaine supporters were.
Everybodies pumped, the crowd is loud and it is incredible here, said the Umaine -Aluin from Sanford.
Samantha Potvin van Lewiston explained in the same way by telephone in the mid game how the championship atmosphere was exciting for her and her entire family, especially her children.
We are super enthusiastic to see Maine represent, and then even come to Boston and see all Umaine sweaters everywhere, we have just been so excited, Potvin said. I mean, Maine is such a small community and it has been so exciting to see it representing it on such a large stage.
Potvin said her family had seen colleague -umaine fans throughout Boston today, which only contributed to the nice experience. Arsenault saw the same in the streets of Boston.
It's so great to be here. The fans called the Alfond South, Arsenault continued. Between walking around the streets, going to restaurants, hotels, there are so many Maine fans below. Everybodies so dedicated to the black bears, and it's just a really special environment.
Umaine head coach Ben Barr also noticed the turnout.
It's crazy how much blue is here. Barr said during a Postgame TV interview that the Maine fans who have traveled to support the team has credited.
It's great for the community, for the state. It is not the last we want to get this year, of course Barr added about the victory, with a nod to the upcoming NCAA tournament. But there are many people who give us everything they may have in terms of support.
Umaine goalkeeper and hockey East Tournament MVP Albin Boija called it so cool to have that kind of fan support in Boston.
Even who entered the Arena today, it was just a sea of blue and white, Boija said. There is nothing that is sure.
