James Madison Womens Tennis Spaces Southern Miss, 4-0
Harrisonburg, va. (JMU Athletics) James Madison convincingly returned to the win column, took a few double courts and won three singles matches in straight sets to Southern Miss, 4-0, in Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Action on Saturday morning on Hillside Court.
The dukes (5-10, 3-2 Sun Belt) moved above .500 in competition matches and only needed 122 minutes to beat Southern Miss (4-8, 0-5 Sun Belt). JMU is now 2-0 of all time versus the Golden Eagles and takes part in the 4-1 win in Harrisonburg last season.
Elena Kraleva and Hope Moulin both went 2-0 on the day, while Daria Munteanu achieved the decisive fourth point in the game of Singles.
JMU took the early 1-0 lead after claiming two of the three Doubles. Moulin and Sophie Williams gave JMU the advantage with a 6-3 victory in the court three against Sakura Sudo and Miranda Xu.
In a tight match at the court, Hannah Chambers and Jordan Parker won a crucial Deuce point to keep the win and close the victory, at 6-4, about Munteanu and Ines Oliveira. With doubles that came to the court, JMU had to break the Serve of USM late in the game and did exactly that.
Southern Miss fought the match back to Square, at 5-5, before Kraleva and Mia Saveljic broke the serve of the Golden Eagles to take a 6-5 lead. In the following game, the JMU duo held its service to beat Malannia Vashkevich and Talia Wunnenberg, 7-5 and beat the double point.
In Singles Play, JMU opening set earned victories on five of the six courts, but JMU brought things right, forcing a third set in the game where he initially fell behind. The dukes had strong impressions about most courts, with the three winners not admitted no more than four total matches to end the day.
Kraleva was the first to finish when she dropped Vashkevich, 6-2, 6-1, two on the field to double the lead. Seconds later, Moulin finished a masterful second set, while she rolled a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Gagana Mohan Kumar in court six.
More than a result needed, Munteanu achieved the team win for the Dukes on Court One and achieved Chambers with a 6-1, 6-3 score.
Elsewhere, JMU Leads had the remaining courts on all three, because Oliveira was on the field three (2-6, 6-2, 2-0 UF), while Williams (6-4, 3-2 UF) and Saveljic (6-4, 2-1) each were four and five rights, respectively.
The victory was JMU's second 4-0 result of the season and participated in the Triumph at VCU on March 1. It was also the biggest victory margin in an SBC match since a 7-0 win over ULM on March 28, 2024.
JMU will be back on the field tomorrow morning when it organizes at 9 o'clock #60 South Alabama at the East Campus Tennis Courts at 9 am
