Former Alabama -star Sherman Williams will Leiden the Murphy High Football program
Former Blount High and Alabama football star Sherman Williams has been approved as the new main football coach at Murphy High in Mobile.
Williams replaces Justin Hannah as head coach of the teams. Hannah was relieved of his coaching tasks in September. Dwight Lambert closed the season as the Panthers interim coach.
It is the first task of the head coaching for Williams, which was approved by the Mobile County School Board during the monthly meeting on Monday morning. Williams will address the team on Tuesday morning.
Murphy High School is pleased to announce the hiring of Sherman Williams as the new main football coach of the Panthers, Murphy director Ed Sanderson said in a statement. Mr. Williams brings a wealth of football knowledge and experience into the program. What is even more important, he is dedicated to serving as a positive role model and mentor for all students on campus. We look forward to his leadership and the positive impact he will have on both the athletic program and the school community.
As a senior at Blount, he became the first Alabama who ran back to hurry more than 3,000 meters in a season. He ran for 3,004 yards and 31 touchdowns at 307 wears the leopards to the 5A State title class in 1990. He was named 5A player of the year.
He signed his university career with 2,486 Yards and 27 touchdowns on 535 Carry's. He also received 424 meters and 2 TDs. The Dallas Cowboys selected him in the second round of the 1995 design. He played five seasons in Dallas and hurried for 1,162 yards and 4 TDs wearing 302.
Williams arrived in difficult times after his professional career and was sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in prison in 2000 on three counts of conspiracy to distribute marijuana and a separate plea for passing falsified currency. He was released on March 1, 2014 and he and former Alabama teammate David Palmer were looking for a way to influence underprivileged young people in a positive issue. They created the Palmer Williams group for that specific goal and Williams has continued to return to his community.
Williams has also written a few books about his journey.
He takes a once busy Murphy program that has struggled enormously in recent years. The Panthers have won only four games together in the last three years, has not reached play -offs since 2019 and has not won a play -off game since 2011.
Murphy also plays in the very competitive class 6A, region 1 together with multi-year Playoff opportunities Saraland, Spanish Fort, St. Pauls, McGill-Toolen, Gulf Shores, Theodore, Blount and Baldwin County.
