March 24 (UPI) – Former Bangladeshi Cricket team captain Tamim Iqbal Khan was “Under Close Observation” on Monday after the 36-year-old had sustained a cardiac arrest.

“Tamim Iqbal Khan suffered a cardiac arrest this morning in the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP),” Read one Declaration in part by the cricket board of Bangladesh, adding that he received “immediate medical treatment of emergency” and underwent a “successful angiogram procedure to tackle a blockage in one of the arteries of his heart.”

Iqbal Khan, who represented his native Bangladesh nearly 400 times from 2007 to 2023, played for Mohammedan Sporting Club in Dhaka during a domestic T20 match.

He reported complaints about chest pain after jumping on the field in the Dhaka Premier League match against Shinepukur.

“He is currently close observation on the coronary healthcare unit of the hospital,” continued Cricket Board's statement.

Plans to transport Iqbal via helicopter were scrubbed when his condition started to deteriorate when doctors opted for a closer medical facility in the KPJ Specialized Hospital.

“In the first blood test there was a problem” according to BCB Hoofdarts Debashish Chowdhury.

“He said he felt uncomfortable and wanted to go back to Dhaka. An ambulance was called in and when he returned from the hospital to the field, he felt a pain in his chest again,” Chowdhury added. “He was then taken to the hospital for the second time and it seemed that he had a huge heart attack. Now he is being observed in the Fazilatunnesa Hospital.”

The BCB chef said that the outpouring of concern for him reflects “how much he is loved and appreciated by the nation.”
