In 1978 Gino Gasparini was not the popular choice for und Hockey – Grand Forks Herald
Grand Forks in 1978, und launched a coaching search for replacement of Rube Bjorkman, who resigned after 10 seasons.
None of the last six Bjorkman teams had the worst part in the program history.
End Athletic Director Carl Miller's search started with Denver coach Marshall Johnston. He was interested in the job, but continued because, according to reports, his wife did not want to move to Grand Forks.
Then Ned Harkness seemed to be the target.
Harkness, who had won two NCAA -National titles in Cornell, flew to Grand Forks to interview and thought he had the job.
He (Miller) offered me the job last Tuesday: “Harkness told The Herald.” I have been in hockey long enough to know when I got a job and when I am not. I can say with 100 percent truth, unambiguously, that the job was mine.
But Miller did not take on Harkness.
He went with the assistant coach of Bjorkman, Gino Gasparini.
The rent was not popular in Grand Forks.
The Virg Foss of the Herald and Abe Winter were flooded with phone calls. Foss reported that of the approximately 50 calls they received, none approved by hiring Gasparini.
According to the Herald: “A group of Unds -large financial financiers met on Monday afternoon to talk about ways to turn the decision before it was made public in the press conference. It was impossible to do.”
The Herald called it “one of the biggest controversies to burst out in und sports circles.”
Miller's reasoning for recruitment: the children we have now are not doing badly now. If Gasparini gets the chance and got a good defensive coach, only three or four children were removed from having a hell of a hockey team.
That is how it all started for what became one of the most important figures in the history of und hockey.
In a hurry, Gasparini made a sleeping und program in a powerhouse.
No division-i Heren College Hockey team has won more NCAA titles than unde since the recruitment of Gasparini.
He brought Und to the NCAA National Championship Game in his first year as head coach. He won his second year. He again won NCAA titles in 1982 and 1987.
Gasparini brought Dean Blais to staff. Blais became his successor and added NCAA National Championships in 1997 and 2000.
Gasparini recruited Dave Hakstol and Brad Berry, who coached a combined 21 years without a losing season. Berry added a national championship in 2016.
The most unpopular rent in the history of Und was perhaps the best.
Und is now going to look for a new coaching.
The fighting Hawks shot Berry at the helm after a decade. Und can announce his replacement as fast as this weekend.
The lesson from 1978: in the end it is winning what matters.
