Meet the 88-year-old Umaine Hockey fan who went viral in Boston with his granddaughters
Harry Duvall has seen many hockey matches in his 88 years. Many of them were with his wife, Jeanette, who shared his love for the game. She was even included in the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame For her role that leads a youth hockey program.
The couple were married for 66 years, including an 18-year-old stretch where they went to every NCAA hockey tournament, frozen four.
When Jeanette died in December, two of their granddaughters decided to give him a special Christmas gift for a difficult time. So they got him cards for the Hockey East Championship.
In the Christmas season they didn't know much that the team of the University of Maine Beren would like to watch not only the championship game of the conference, but would also win it.
So we just bought the tickets knowing that he loves university hockey, Kayla Rose explained.
Duvall enjoyed the and rise of Umaine fans in Boston. He described how strangers were high-fiving and hugging when the Black Bears worked to secure their first conference championship since 2004.
I was overwhelmed, Duvall said. I called it and I am sure I am not the only one who called the Alfond South. Because it was deafening.
Both Kayla and Amber Rose grew up in Falmouth and played hockey on the North Yarmouth Academy, and now live in Boston. Their grandparents stuck a family in Needham, Massachusetts, although Duvall now lives in Falmouth. He played lectures -hockey at Clarkson University in New York for two years and coached for 40 years Hockey in Needham.
My grandfather is definitely the one who continued the torch of, was a hockey family, Kayla Rose explained because his passion was contagious.

He said that the journey to the title game came at the right time after such a challenging period with his female illness and death.
It meant the world for me, he said about his granddaughters who got the tickets and said that his wife would have been besides herself at the thought that they would share that experience together.
Oh God, she loved hockey, said an understandably emotional Duvall about his wife.
His granddaughters delivered the perfect gift at a much needed time and the Umaine-Hockey Team supplied a conference championship directly in the field of the family.
Duvall has deep ties with Maine that go much further than his recent move to Falmouth. His family traveled to Robbinston every summer and grew up, they had a camp at Vinalhaven for decades and he got to know the coast of Maine very well from Eastport to Portland while he was in the coast guard.
His brother Howie has Hockey Season tickets and lives in Robbinston, making an impressive ride on the road known as the airline to see the matches in Orono.
I love the Maine people, I have always done that, Duvall said.
And he also likes to keep this Umaine Hockey team.
They never stop. They have a great attitude, Duvall said about the Hockey East champions and emphasized how they returned to win the semi -final against NorthEastern University in double overtime hours before the final. That never quit posture was something he used as a coach.
He called head coach Ben Barr a catch for the program and said that Black Bear fans are all very special in my heart.
I would not count them this year, he said about the teams on the way to the NCAA tournament.
Last Friday was clearly a meaningful night for Duvall and his granddaughters, after the loss of his wife.
We were just lucky that his favorite team eventually won everything, said Kayla Rose. It was very nice to witness, and it was definitely a memorable night.
Duvall called the experience Good Tonic for me after such a difficult time to lose his wife, who watched so many games with him over the years.
A reporter suggested that she was still there with them in Spirit on Friday evening for Umes -winning.
