The purpose of the last second sends no. 16 men's hockey to the regional final of the NCAA, topping nr. 1 Michigan State

Toledo, Ohio after 40 minutes it seemed just as well done.

Herenhockey only collected four shots on the goal in the second period against top -ranking Michigan State. It gave a goal about a turnover from the goalkeeper who seemed destined to be the game winner.

But there are not 40 minutes in a hockey game.

Cornell skated the last 20 minutes with his backup against the wall an expression that has been used considerably in recent weeks.

We knew that at some point we would get some adversity, said senior goalkeeper Ian Shane. So whether it is in the first period, the third period, we were ready to face it.

It was looking for a miracle.

But Cornell was also looking for a miracle only six days ago against Quinnipiac in the semi -final of the ECAC tournament. That got it.

Cornell found another miracle on Thursday.

No. 16 Cornell, the lowest seed in the regional Toledo, at the top of the state no. 1 Michigan State, 4-3, at a goal with 10 seconds left. The Red was 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before he scored twice in the third period to beat the Spartans, the second placed team in the entire tournament behind Powerhouse Boston College.

A Power Play goal achieved Cornell a place in the regional final an area where Cornell had struggled all year round. The Red had one chance all night for the Power Play and Senior Vooruit Sullivan Mack had it counted.

The Spartans surpass Cornell 37-21. The red made the most out of his chances.

I kept telling our boys: ignore the shots on the board, Schafer said. They shoot a lot of pucks everywhere.

Although Mack stole the show with his buzzing game winner, it was another senior between the legs that made the victory possible Shane made 34 saves, including a handful of point-blank opportunities in the play, to send Cornell to the regional final.

The victory makes head coach Mike Schafer 86 11-4 in NCAA first round races. His team has now won seven games in a row and will try to make it eight in the regional final of a stage in which Schafer only won once.

We waited 365 days to get here, Schafer said. I think losing, just like something else, you are preparing to be more resilient. It prepares you to get better. And I think that's what these guys did tonight.

After a hot start, Michigan State broke Cornell's six-game streak of scoring first. The two goals in the first period were also the most allowed by Cornell in the first period since 28 February, the last regulation loss come into the hands of Union.

With less than five minutes left in the period, Cornell found a much needed response. Sophomore attacker Ryan Walsh made a handy game, took the bag of a Spartan skater and immediately beat the Michigan State goalkeeper Trey Augustine to tie the score.

It seemed that Cornell could escape the first period tied up with the top team in the country, but a cross-checking fine from Junior Vooruit Dalton Bancroft sent Cornell to the penalty kill with only 49 seconds left in the period. It took only 20 seconds for the State Michigan to renovate the lead, with Daniel Russell hit a vast Shane after some strong passing sequences of the Spartans.

The second period saw each team a goal, but it was nothing less than a dominant 20 minutes through the Spartans. Michigan State did not allow Cornell to go on goal in the period to more than halfway through the frame, and kept the red to only four shots in the period completely.

Despite the attack of Spartan pressure, the Red eventually brought the game on 2-2 on just his second shot of the period. A deadly One-Timer from first-year student Charlie Major, after Michigan State had pressed time and again, had every opportunity to suck the wind out of the Spartan sails.

Then a disaster struck. After the subsequent Faceoff, Shane came out of his net to play the puck. After hesitation to make a decision, Shane finally turned the puck and Karsen Downart took the puck and shot it in the open net. The goal came only 17 seconds after binding the goal of Majors.

You just laugh a bit. It is a difficult goal, not someone you want to let in, Shane said. But as I said before, you can't really get too far for yourself. I can't worry about it.

By the way, I didn't laugh, Schaferer said. It was frustrating to give up that third party.

Cornell skated a goal for the last frame and wants to keep his season and Schaanen career alive. The state of Michigan was 18-0-2 when he led to that moment after two periods.

It seemed promising to start Cornell with a persistent pressure in his attacking zone for almost two minutes, catching the Spartans defensively and generated a few good chances of Augustine.

Michigan State followed that with a chance of the class, making it almost a shortage of two goals, but Shane made his best of the night on Downart Downart's goalcorer from Shanes Gaffe with the puck that was all alone in the low lock and was met with a vast left cushion and glove to hold a one-score game.

It naturally gives you a lot of confidence when they enter the draw, [but] You don't want to stay for yourself. Michigan State is a dangerous team, Shane said. It was actually just a matter of setting up and setting up in the game and just concentrating a bit on what I have to do.

Then the red broke. After a first shot of a second -year defender Ben Robertson, his colleague classmate Walsh, who defeated Augustine for the second time that night, was at the door to bind the match a third time for Cornell.

Tonight he wasted time on that rebound goal of Ben [Robertson]Schafer said. He wasn't handing over, he released it quickly. He is big on face-offs. He can play against the top rules of other teams. So he has been a great player for us all season.

The last frame was undoubtedly Cornells the best of the three, it was the only period that the red surpassed the Spartans in (12-7) and Cornell turned the Puck with a much less frequent speed than in the first two periods.

We definitely needed a wake -up call after the second period, Mack said. And the coaching staff came in [and] Schafer came in and told us: let's let it go here. “

With just under two minutes to go, senior attacker Jack Oleary called in the attacking zone to chase the puck. Spartan defender Matt Basgall went after Oleary and moved slower than the fast 57 forward.

That speed was finally paid off Oleary was knocked down by BasGall, and with 1:39, the hand of the referee went up. Cornell would get a power play.

And although Cornells Power Play has been consistently arranged to the bottom of the country, it has taken on a new life lately, it may not be very consistent. But it has been a link.

Cornell pushed and pushed. Then, the announcement of the last minute of the periods. Cornell kept the puck in his zone. Major got the puck with less than 20 seconds. He falsified and then sent the puck to Mack. The two changed another series, before Major fed him a final feed that somehow, somehow, carried through the solid Spartan defense.

The puck was in the back of the net in an instant.

Cornell scored on the Power Play only his 16th Power Play goal all year round to take a 4-3 lead over Michigan State to go with 10 seconds. Those 10 seconds would pass and the Red would continue Swarm Shane and increase the top team in the region and in the country.

This season I fed everything I could not imagine, Schafer said. As a coach you have been in the business for 39 years and you think you have seen everything.

Cornell sends the victory to the regional final on Saturday against Boston University. Schafer will try to continue to his second frozen four in his coaching career, the last being in 2003. Puck drop is either 4:00 pm or 6:30 pm
