How Ty Simpson, Alabama Football QBS did in First Spring Scrimmage
When Kalen Deboer was asked about the performance of the Alabama Football Quarterbacks on the first scrimmage of Crimson Tide Thursday, his mind first went to what went wrong.
Especially two throws. Not called the quarterback, Deboer said that a “really short pass you really want to see completed.” The other: “An opportunity for an explosive game that we missed.”
In general, however, Deboer was satisfied with the Quarterback room of Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell, and said that the unit looked “more comfortable”. He also said he saw nothing that would necessarily change his mind about the status of the room.
“I think it is pretty consistent from where it was from the start,” Deboer said. “They all bring something a bit different than the table. Although it is not like perhaps a runner and then a passer -by, it is guys who do their thing and what their strengths are.”
Deboer said that every quarterback will have the chance to lead with the first and second team units, and said that each treated the game management aspects of the scrimmage well, “and then go outside and play.”
Although he did not specify Simpson, Mack or Russell, Deboer said that a Quarterback is being dismissed by his ability to throw catchable balls, while the other who is better in field casting and even better in clambering.

“They all take something from each other's game and apply it to theirs and see that there is always a way to make this game happen or that game happens,” Deboer said.
Simpson has the most experience in Alabama's Quarterback room with 381 Yards on 50 career opportunities attempts for three seasons. The incoming Redshirt Junior has three hasty touchdowns to his name, but no passing touchdowns.
Mack is Alabama's only quarterback with a passing touchdown to his name: a score of 31 Yard for Rico Scott against Mercer last season.
And Russell is the highest rated Alabama Quarterback signor since Bryce Young.
All in all, Deboer saw a room that did well to keep his eyes down, touch explosive plays, show calmness and keep the chains moving.
Deboer sees a room 'coming into a groove'. He just didn't indicate which quarterback did what.
Alabama will hold another spring crimmage before it is a day before 12 April in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
