Tennis legend Achanta Sharath Kamal is retiring
Chennai: Indian table tennis legend Achanta Sharath Kamal hung his boots after his face against Snehit Suravajula in the Heren's Hirks of 16 at WTT starter Chennai 2025. The 3-0 defeat against his countryman was that this was the last official game of Sharath. The five -time Olympic and Indias most celebrated Paddler, Sharath, had announced his retirement of table tennis prior to the start of the tournament, Ians reported.
At the age of 42, Sharath, a record of 10 times National Champion, currently Indias Top-Gerang-arranged Mens Singles player, is 92nd placed in the latest WTT ranking. Sharath has won 13 Commonwealth Games medals (including seven gold) and two Asian games bronze medals, five Olympic Games performances and two ITTF Pro Tour titles in his two decades-long career.
He won his first national title in 2003 and his first international medal at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2004. His career graphic reached a new high when he qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In 2004, Sharath received the Arjuna Award and won five national titles in a row. A historic singles gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth games in Melbourne and another gold in the men's team event has closed a successful year.
In 2010 he became the first Indian table tennis player to win an ITTF Pro Tour title when he won the Egypt Open. Sharath won two Commonwealth Games Gold Medals in 2010 – in the men's team and men's doubles. He underwent a lean period for a few years, did not win titles or medals during the Commonwealth Games 2014 or Asian games, and could not be eligible for the Olympic Games in London 2012.
He won medals in every event in which he participated in the Commonwealth Games 2018 (gold, silver and two bronze medals). He also won two bronze medals at the Asian Games 2018.
In 2019, the veteran came to a career-best ranking of world no. 30 and won a ninth national title in the same year. The following year, at the age of 37, Sharath won his second international title on the Oman Open, a decade after his first.
During the summer games of Tokyo 2020 it was his fourth Olympic appearance, but the Indian veteran, who got a bye in the first round, lost 4-1 to the Chinese legend and finally gold-media player Ma Long in the round of 32.
Despite his age, Sharath has not shown any signs of delay because he won bronze in the men's team and the men's events at the Asian table tennis championships 2021.
In April 2022 he won his 10th national title with an impressive 4-3 victory over Sathiyan Gnanasekaran in the final. In the Commonwealth Games 2022 he took the gold medal in Herenhonkslagen.
He took the mixed team gold medal at CWG 2022 with Sreeja Akula, a gentlemen doubled silver with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and the gold medal of the men's team too. Sharath also received the highest sporting honor – the most important Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in the same year.
The veteran was also part of the Indian Table Tennis Squad for the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou and played an integral role in helping India to get a teamquotum for Paris 2024, a very first for the country at the Olympic Games.
Sharath was the flag carrier of India for the Olympic opening ceremony of Paris 2024 next to Ace Shuttler PV Sindhu, making him the first table tennis player from India who got the honor. Unfortunately, his run in Heren Singles ended prematurely after an opening round loss.
