Jannik Sinner: Italian considered stop tennis during doping case
Sinner was previously released from a misconduct by an independent panel, but WADA launched an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), looking for a ban of up to two years.
However, he reached a settlement with the anti-doping agency for a shorter sanction and is expected to make his comeback at the Italian Open (6-18 May) in Rome after his ban ends on 5 May.
Wada acknowledged that Sinner did not achieve a competitive advantage of the forbidden substance and that he did not go wrong for a casual infection.
His ban was criticized by some in the tennis world, with 23-way Grand Slam Singles champion Serena Williams stating that she would have received a ban of 20 years and had “taken away” her titles.
Former British number one Tim Henman labeled the agreement “Too handy”, while triple Swiss Grand SLAM champion Stan Wawrinka said he “no longer believed in clean sport”.
Sinner, however, defended his position when he added: “I don't want to respond to criticism. People are free to say what they want and to judge people.
“What is important to me is that I knew what I experienced. It was difficult and I wouldn't want someone to endure that as an innocent person.”
