Canada excludes Slovenia to open ice hockey worlds and Sweden Austria
Stockholm – Canada opened the Ice Hockey World Championship by closing newcomer Slovenia on Saturday 4-0.
Bo Horvat scored two Power-Play Goals, Nathan Mackinnon had a goal and two assists and Noah Dobson also scored on a Power Play. Dylan Garand made 11 saves for Canada in the A -competition group in the Swedish capital.
Horvat opened the score 7:22 in the opening period with a shot with one timmered from the left circle.
Canada added three more goals in the middle period when Slovenia surpassed 22-3.
Mackinnon doubled the benefit 3:41 in the frame with a shot between the pads of goalkeeper Lukas Horak. Mackinnon chose to become a member of Canada after his member Colorado Avalanche was eliminated from the NHL play -offs in the first round.
Horvat added his second with 6:22 to go and Dobson transferred the score on 4-0 with 3:05 in the second.
Canada is the most successful nation at the tournament with 28 titles, but finished fourth last year.
With Mackinnon and Captain Sidney Crosby Samen in the worlds after 10 years, Canada is a clear favorite to win for the third time in the past five years.
Last year, bronze medal winner Sweden had to come to reach Austria 4-2 in Stockholm.
Mika Zibanejad scored twice and Jonas Brodin and Alexander Wennberg each had a goal for the Sweden.
With 2-1 on the back they came back late in the last period.
Sweden pulled keeper Samuel Erson for an extra attacker 2:55 for the last whistle and Brodin fixed it on 2-2 with a blow of the blue line with 2:19.
Zibanejad scored the winner of the slot 12 seconds later for his second. Wennberg added one to an empty net.
After he had lost 2-1 to Finland on Friday, Austria still produced a decent performance against a title favorite.
Zibanejad tied it at 1-1 after Benjamin Baumgarten set up the Austrians in the middle period, but Marco Kasper restored an advantage of one goal for Austria 2:26 in the last period.
In Herning, Denmark, Germany sent another newcomer Hungary 6-1 in group B after Kazakhstan Norway defeated 2-1.
France will be confronted with Latvia in Stockholm in Stockholm later on Saturday, while 2024 Runner-Up Switzerland will take on Denmark in Herning.
