Canada gets revenge on USA to reach Ice Hockey World Cup semi-finals | Ice hockey
Canada posted a 4-0 victory over reigning champions the United States on Thursday to book a spot in the semifinals of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship. It survived a third-period attack to exact revenge on the Americans, who defeated them in this year’s Olympic final.
That 2-1 overtime loss in February was painful for the Canadians, who crashed out of last year’s world championship in the quarterfinals after losing 2-1 to Denmark in one of the biggest upsets in the sport’s history.
Thursday’s game in Switzerland was a much less dramatic affair, with Canada taking the lead late in the first period on a power-play goal from Macklin Celebrini, who fired the puck into the top right corner past Devin Cooley’s glove for his sixth goal of the tournament.
Dylan Holloway doubled Canada’s lead midway through the second frame, knocking the puck home on the second attempt after a fast break, but the Americans fought back furiously in the final period in a desperate bid to stay in the tournament.
However, Canadian goaltender Jet Greaves made a series of fine saves to secure his shutout, and Connor Brown and Sidney Crosby both scored late into an empty net to seal victory for their side.
In the afternoon’s other last eight match, Finland defeated the Czech Republic 4-1 to book a place in the last four. Norway will take on Latvia later on Thursday and Sweden will take on hosts Switzerland in the remaining two quarter-finals.
