Cricket, journalism and me: the road not taken when I stepped into it Punch Newspapers newsroom in October 2022, I wanted to cover as many sports as possible. But choosing a beat was necessary. As I weighed my options, track and field, basketball, tennis, boxing, and pretty much every other mainstream sport had already been assigned. Then I asked my then sports editor: She is in Aiyejina – now deputy editor of The PUNCH – if anyone covered cricket. “Do you understand cricket?” he asked. “Yes, I do,” I replied without hesitation. And that was it. I had never written a cricket story before then. My knowledge of the game came from research and a crash course I received in 2017 from Richson Tetteh and Seun Ajidagba while anchoring on-field interviews and analysis for a cricket tournament catered by Kridence Sports at the Liberty Stadium in Ibadan. That was my first job, fresh out of college. Nearly five years later, my fascination with the underreported sport was still burning. From the time I wrote my first cricket story – upon the appointment of Steve Tikolo as Nigeria’s High Performance Manager on October 24, 2022 – I had to submit at least one cricket report almost every day. I would have described other sports as busy. Cricket turned out to be busier than I thought. Even more fascinating was the young crop of players who emerged from the Nigeria men’s and women’s national teams. In many ways it was still boys and girls representing their country, but the Nigeria Cricket Federation was clearly building something special. Their ambition was contagious. Fast forward to September 2024, when Nigeria’s U-19 girls qualified for the 2025 ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup in Malaysia. I knew my moment had come. I had consistently reported on the sport since its inception, building a catalog of interviews, articles and stories around many of the players. Their qualification provided the opportunity to tell a bigger story. Fortunately, they performed admirably at the World Cup, finishing sixth and creating a wave of cricket awareness across Nigeria. It felt only fitting to document their journey and the slow but steady growth of cricket in the country. So I did. A year after its publication, it won me continental recognition at the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ)/Wikimedia Foundation’s Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards. I am grateful to the ICFJ and the Wikimedia Foundation. And not to forget my employers; Punch Newspapers and the Nigeria Cricket Federation. It is so nice to see that my work contributes to increasing knowledge about Africa. Here’s to many more stories shining a light on underreported performance in Nigeria and across Africa.
