ITTF Postpones Events in China and Hong Kong Due to Coronavirus Crisis

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has postponed events in China and Hong Kong due to the coronavirus crisis.

The World Tour Hong Kong Open, scheduled for May 5-10, has been postponed.

The ITTF also announced that the World Tour Platinum China Open, to be held May 12-17 in Shenzhen, will also be postponed.

“The ITTF is working with the Hong Kong Table Tennis Association and the Chinese Table Tennis Association to find suitable new dates for each event, while closely monitoring the situation,” said the ITTF.

A total of 28 table tennis tournaments around the world have been postponed or suspended by the ITTF due to the virus.

These include Olympic qualifications, which were suspended until at least the end of April in response to the epidemic.

The ITTF also conceded the postponed dates from June 21 to 28 for the team table tennis world championships in Busan, South Korea “which may arrive too soon” due to the “severity of the global crisis”.

There are more than 304,000 cases of coronavirus worldwide, and more than 12,000 people die from the disease.

China was the country of origin, with more than 81,000 cases and 3,200 deaths.

However, restrictions have been relaxed in the country, as the number of new infections registered has reportedly decreased.
