Coronavirus | Former cricketer Sukhvinder Singh talks about his rescue mission in Italy
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded the efforts of Captain Swati Rawal and Captain Raja Chauhan of Air India Boeing 777 who airlifted 263 Indians, mostly students stranded in Rome, it was an appreciation to be cherished for the crew of this historic flight on March 22. Among those involved in the operation was senior chief Sukhvinder Singh, a former left-wing killer from Delhi and Assam.
Important mission
The cabin crew of 20 members traveled to Indira Gandhi International Airport on March 21 to carry out, perhaps, the most important mission of their career. Flying to Rome with 120 Italian nationals and returning with Indian students was the nation’s calling for each crew member.
Employed at Air India (formerly Indian Airlines), for almost 30 years, Sukhvinder is one of the rare athletes not to rest on the laurels on the ground.
When I wasn’t playing, I was flying, said Sukhvinder The Hindu. His career in First Class, spanning from 1986 to 2004, saw him play 47 games (148 wickets and 2,076 points over four centuries).
Cricket has been the driving force for me to take on challenges in life. It was a mission for us. We were going to bring back the youth, the future of India. It was a unique opportunity to serve the country, said the 53-year-old.
