London 2012 to host temporary hospital to treat coronavirus patients

A site used during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is expected to become an emergency hospital to treat patients with coronavirus.

The ExCeL center, which hosted seven Olympic and six Paralympic sports in London 2012, is expected to accommodate up to 4,000 patients.

The makeshift field hospital will initially provide around 500 beds of oxygen and ventilators.

Called Nightingale Hospital, the facility will be staffed by doctors from the National Health Service (NHS), alongside the military.

It was set amid growing fears about the pressure exerted on the NHS by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the latest figures, Britain has reported more than 8,200 cases of COVID-19 and 433 deaths.

This week, the British government imposed tougher measures on the public as part of its efforts to curb the spread of the virus and ordered people to stay at home as much as possible.

To date, the virus has killed more than 19,000 people and infected more than 440,000 worldwide.

Boxing, fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling events were held at ExCeL at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
