Ten Questions with Newburyport Girls’ Tennis Captain Ann de Kanter | Local sports
With school and spring sports postponed until at least the beginning of May, life has radically changed for all of the high school athletes in our regions who expected to prepare for their seasons. Over the next few weeks, we will be talking to local athletes and coaches about how the closure affects them. Today, we hear from Ann de Kanter, senior captain and best singles player on the Newburyport women’s tennis team, triple reigning champion of CAL Kinney.
1. Where were you when you learned that everything was going to stop and what was your reaction?
When I first heard that school was going to be canceled for three weeks, I was on my way to Maine with my family for my birthday weekend. I was really surprised, I knew the situation was bad, but after school was canceled for three weeks, I was shocked.
2. How has this situation affected you personally?
I come from a Dutch Mexican American family, so we have family all over the world. Most importantly, my sister, Emilie, is at university in the Netherlands right now, and with the recent closings in the US and Holland, I won’t be seeing her for a while, which is really difficult. .
3. Under normal circumstances, what would you do now?
Prepare for the tennis season and prepare to go to Europe to visit the colleges where I was accepted. I also intended to make the trip to the Galapagos with the high school during the April holidays, but this was moved to the summer.
4. What were your goals for spring and how have they changed?
I was really focused on preparing the tennis team for our next games and defending the CAL title. Weve won CALs in the past three years, so one of my main goals was to work hard to be a champion again. I was also looking forward to having new players on the team and completing the AP exams.
5. What have you done in recent weeks?
I did a lot of homework and scholarship applications and spent a lot of time with my family.
6. What do you do, if any, to stay in shape?
I run a daily run outside and work out with the weights at home. Fortunately, we have a home gym, or I would definitely go crazy without exercise. I also hiked in New Hampshire and Maine when the weather was nice.
7. Without the NBA, NHL or March Madness, how do you get your sport correction these days?
I read articles and watched the highlights of some of my favorite athletes, like Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal.
8. Have you chosen new hobbies to pass the time?
I started making jewelry crafts to pass the time, but I mostly did homework.
9. What is your film or show to broadcast?
My date is Psych, in which my sister took me when we were younger. I watched the 8 Mile movie recently which was really good.
10. What are your future plans in the event of a post-coronavirus crisis?
Go to Europe to visit schools and see my sister as soon as possible.
