Three Sud Metro teams rank fourth in hockey
Semi-final matches for the state high school hockey tournament are defined.
Valor Christian, seeded (18-2-1), will face reigning double state champion and Jesuit Regis fifth (13-6-2) in a semi-final on March 5 in 5 p.m. to be held at Pepsi. Center. Valor went 1-0-1 against Régis during the regular season.
Chaparral, second seed (16-2-3), will face Fort Collins, third seed (17-3-1) at 7:30 p.m. March 5 in the other semifinal match at Pepsi Center. Chaparral defeated the Lambkins, 3-2, in a regular season competition.
In the quarterfinals on February 29, Valor dominated Pine Creek, 29-12, and scored from Evan Pahos, Blake Rollison and Colton Carlson in a 3-0 victory. Goalkeeper Trey Hirschfield got the shutout.
William Laws had two goals to lead Regis to a 4-2 quarter-final victory over Denver East. Ralston Valley had a 41-26 advantage in penalty shootout against Chaparral, but the Wolverines got goals from Noah Youkin, Jackson Mundell and Owen Hardy for a 3-2 victory. It took two overtime periods before Fort Collins won a 2-1 victory over Cherry Creek while Jason Campos scored the second overtime streak.
The second round matches were played on February 28.
Valor beat Kent Denver, 5-2, while Carlson scored twice and Mason Hoehn scored one goal and three assists.
Regis beat Mountain Vista, 5-1, with Leighton Walsh with two goals and one assist for the Raiders. Younkin had two goals and a assist to help Chaparral back off Glenwood Springs, 6-3.
Logan Douglass scored the Castle View goal in a 9-1 defeat to Denver East, while Benjamin Powell had what turned out to be the winning goal when Cherry Creek defeated Heritage, 2 -1, in a second round match.
