Jerry Jones spoke to Dontari Poe before DT knelt
FRISCO, Texas Dontari Poe planned to speak to Jerry Jones, the owner of Cowboys.
The defensive tackle cleared when Dallas acquired him this offseason that no Cowboys who had played during the National Anthem had knelt since former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick launched the move in 2016. A few Dallas players had raised their fists to participate in protests of police brutality and racial inequality. But no cowboy had knelt, and Poe intended to do that. So he wanted to discuss his intentions with Jones.
I had to talk to Jerry, had to talk to teammates, coaches to make sure this didn’t come at the expense of our ultimate goal, Poe said Wednesday. And I just told them I want to do this. If they had a problem with it, we were always open to talk about it. I want to explain to them what my reasoning was for this.
Poe said his conversation with Jones from both sides was all positive. Each explained their different life experiences, Poe said. Since then, Poe knelt during the national anthem each of the first three weeks. No other player has knelt, but teammates visibly support him. Defensive linemen Aldon Smith and Antwaun Woods each put a hand on one of Poes’ shoulders during Week 1 National Anthem in Seattle. Linebacker Justin March and security Donovan Wilson did this in Week 2 against Atlanta. In Seattle, Jourdan Lewis and Saivion Smith flanked him in the corner. Expect the rotation to continue.
The best thing to do for Dontari is to let him know: No one is wondering what he’s doing, said Cowboys’ right-hand guard Zack Martin. Everyone behind him and the decision he makes. We would continue to do that all year round.
And Poe continues to kneel.
Just because I felt that America in general wasn’t doing the right thing about the things that happened to the people of my color, said Poe, who is black. I feel that the oppression being experienced, the racial injustice experienced was truly unfair and I feel that we as a country can do more. I just want it to be known that I felt like it was wrong. I felt like it was wrong in the past, the present, hopefully not in the future, but maybe.
I’ll take a knee until I feel like it’s taking a step in the right direction.

In previous seasons, Jones insisted that all Cowboys players have their feet on the line for the national anthem. This year, the owner / general manager turned his point of view and asked fans to understand that his players have problems that they need help with.
That’s the great thing about America: Everyone has a difference, Jones said on Sept. 4 on radio station 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. When our players are there, they are sensitive to and respect what America is in relation to the flag. I can assure you that. I hope our fans and I think they will understand that our players have problems that require help. They need help from the majority of America.
They need help.
Quarterback Dak Prescott said for the season that it’s not what America needs in 2020 to force your opinion and your perceptions on anyone.
If I’d had it my way, Prescott said, that’s exactly what we would do, express ourselves individually, but love and support each other.
Poe said he was glad his kneeling was something big that people disagreed with. After the national anthem, he shifted his focus to football, where he started every game and played about half of the team’s defensive snaps. He had three tackles during the start of Dallas 1-2.
The nine-year NFL veteran began work on tackling inequality before he started kneeling. Through his Poe Mans Dream Foundation, Poe has coordinated programming for underprivileged youth in Memphis and San Francisco, including a “Shark Tank” -like contest for youth entrepreneurs. Poe said he had spoken to police in Atlanta and Carolina during his previous NFL stops. More recently, he spoke with Dallas police officers at a local gas station.
I don’t have a problem with police officers if they do the right thing, and these guys were happy to see me, Poe said. So as I spoke to them, I said, May I ask you an honest question? From then on we just talked and they told me Man, we would be more than happy to get anywhere that you would want their police chief, their captain to just come and talk to us and explain to us what’s going on in their particular neighborhood is going on. Not all of them are police officers, and terrible for us, there are some. So we just want to get into their minds and I want to pick their brains.
There is still a lot to be done, but I do as much as I can in the off season, during the season. I started in Memphis and I will move it to as many places as possible to try and make my mark on getting better.
