Built Tough: Marlborough High senior Amy Shanahan shows off her grittiness with the hockey team – Sports – Milford Daily News

Due to her toughness and skillful play, she leads the Marlborough High hockey team. Thanks to a little bit of hard love from her older brother.

HUDSON – Growing up, Amy Shanahan received hard love from her older brother, Liam.

“He was going to beat me up,” Amy said, laughing. “I certainly learned a lot of toughness from him.”

On Monday, Amy, a senior from Marlborough High, showed that toughness in a hockey game against Hudson.

She scored a goal and added an assist to the Panthers’ 2-1 victory over the Hawks in the Morgan Bowl to help Marlborough improve to 2-0.

“By just seeing how she has developed over the years, she has clearly shown a lot of scrappiness,” said Marlborough athletic director Jeff Rudzinsky. “Some of that Shanahan toughness has definitely been rubbed off on her.”

After a 5-0 victory over Bromfield on Friday in which Amy Shanahan produced three assists, she quickly established herself as a playmaker in the first period on Monday.

She threw a pass for the Hudson net to second teammate Abby Hennessy, who parked the ball in the back of the cage for a goal. Later, in the second period, when the skies opened up and rain trickled down on each player’s head, Shanahan defeated two defenders on their way to a solo goal that started right in the middle of the field. It marked her fifth run in just two games this season.

“Amy is a silent competitor,” said Marlborough hockey coach Mel Melkonian. “She gets shy and quiet until she gets into game mode.”

On the other hand, Hudson goalkeeper and freshman Jessica Safranski held their own when Marlborough controlled more than half of the game. Safranski – also an ice hockey player – is one of nine freshmen or eighth graders on the Hudson team as the program has a total of 21 players, no junior varsity team and only one senior.

“My job is to educate a new crop of kids every year,” said Hudson hockey coach Jen Wallingford. “My preseason is like summer camp, but there was no time for that.”

Despite the inexperience on the Hudson side, sophomore Kristyn Vasselin played well, scoring the Hawks’ lone goal in the third period.

Still, it was Amy Shanahan’s show on Monday. Something her older brother wished he could have watched in person.

“It’s great to see, I wish I could be there,” said Liam. “It’s good to see that she is finally one of the star players and gets a lot of playing time.”

Liam, a former two-year captain at Marlborough High for football, led the Panthers to three consecutive league titles while manning the offensive line. He then played football at Harvard University for three years. There, he was named to the All-Ivy League first team as a junior and earned the Joseph E. Wolf Award as the program’s best inner lineman before moving to Louisiana State University (LSU) this season.

Last summer, the 6-foot-5, 304-pound offensive lineman played sports and teamed up with his younger sister. When it came to playing hockey over the years with Amy – and their two other sisters in Helen and Keira – Liam had a bold attitude.

“He always said if he played he would have been the best player ever,” said Amy, laughing. “I was like, ‘No you wouldn’t.'”

“I’m sure I told her,” Liam said, laughing.

Growing up, Liam and his three sisters did almost everything together. That’s when tough love came into play.

“We would literally do anything. Play nearby, play basketball in our driveway and even play board games, ”said Liam. “We were really competitive; it ended in a fight almost every time. “

Helen and Kiera both played hockey at Marlborough High, while Liam took to the gridiron during the fall season. When Amy entered high school, she followed in her sister’s footsteps and tried hockey for the first time.

Now her toughness and skillful play is leading the Marlborough High hockey team. Thanks to a little bit of hard love from her older brother.
