MANHATTAN, Kan. No. 13 K-State was limited to a season-low .141 hitting efficiency in an outright defeat to the top-ranked Texas Longhorns Saturday night at Bramlage Coliseum, 15-25, 16-25, 16-25.
Texas (8-0, 8-0 Big 12) used 11 team blocks to force the Wildcats (3-3, 3-3 Big 12) to 19 fouls in three sets. K-State only produced 32 kills, while the Longhorns managed 44, led by 17 from Logan Eggleston.
“I felt like we got off to a decent start, but to be honest I don’t think we have done very well on our side of the net,” said head coach Suzie Fritz said after the game. “(Texas) made some pretty effective changes. Last night I thought our service and pass was significantly better, we won that little fight in the game. But tonight I didn’t feel like that. Our first contact, in terms of service. en pass, wasn’t as strong as last night, which felt like a clear difference.
“I felt like we were relatively prepared to come in, we just weren’t efficient enough to win the game.”
The Cats were led offensively by freshmen Jayden Nembhard, who made a total of seven kills in just two sets off the bench. Brynn Carlson and Kadye Fernholz added six kills each Aliyah Carter contributed five.
K-State took an early three-point lead in the opening set, 7-4, before a 12-3 Longhorn sprint mid-frame. Texas finished the set on a 15-5 run, led by six kills on 13 swings from Eggleston. Fernholz scored four kills out of six bouts to defeat the Cats.
Texas did not foul offense in the first game, with a total of 13 kills on 30 tries (.433). Conversely, the UT defense picked up six team blocks by holding K-State to a .167 efficiency. The Longhorns also served three aces.
The Longhorns were leading from start to finish in the second, as they scored eight of the first 10 points of the set. Later, a 5-1 run opened a nine-point lead. Eggleston added six more kills in the second set, hitting Texas .448. Nembhard got into the game, downing five kills to nine attacks with only one error. Abigail Archibong picked up all three of her kills in the set.
With the Wildcats leading 15-14, Texas rattled off the next eight points on its way to ending the game at an 11-1 point.
K-State hit a match low .029 in the final set, registering nine kills to eight errors on 34 swings. Carter had a team high three kills on five attacks.
Freshman libero Mackenzie Morris led K-State in excavations for the sixth game in a row to start the season, with nine on the night.
The K-State defense took four blocks in total, while Archibong led with a pair of block assists.
Brionne Butler hit .562 while taking a total of 10 kills on 16 tries (one error).
Texas’ .389 hitting percentage was a season high by a Wildcat opponent this season. The game was the Wildcats’ first game of the season with three sets.
The Cats stay at home while the Oklahoma Sooners visit the Bramlage Coliseum for a series of two games starting on Thursday. Both games will be broadcast live on Big 12 Now on ESPN +.
