Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers no match for defense of Tampa Bay Buccaneers, eliminated twice

Don’t tell Aaron Rodgers that Super Bowl LV is at Raymond James Stadium.

That hasn’t been the Green Bay Packers quarterback’s happy place.

He left Tampa, Florida twice, injured: a shoulder in 2008 and a calf in 2014.

He showed up there on Sunday hoping for something else, saying for the past week, “I hope the third time is the charm.”

Sunday was nothing charming. Rodgers threw a few interceptions, including a rare pick-six, and the Packers (4-1) lost for the first time this season 38-10 to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-2).

“You never want to lose like that,” Rodgers said. “I felt like we needed to be a little shaken up this season because things were going so well and there has been so much talk outside the building about the ease with which we hit the ball and score. I think we had a bit of a kick. in the ass. There’s a little bit of waking up to stop feeling like ourselves and get back to the things that put us in this position. I think this would be, unfortunately but luckily something we can really get out of to grow. “

Rodgers had been interception-free on his first 156 passes of the season, but at number 157 he threw one to Buc’s safety Jamel Dean. It became a bit rarer for Rodgers: a pick-six. Before that action, Rodgers had pitched 6,214 times in his career and only two of those had been intercepted and returned for scores. It happened a third time on his 6,215th throw. That’s just one pick-six for every 2,071 pitches, but two of those made it to Tampa Bay (the other was his first ever, in 2009).

“That happens …” said Rodgers. “Haven’t had much of it over the years. But the wind was blowing pretty good from right to left and like I said I felt good about the place. I knew it was tight, we hit such throws. “But I probably missed a foot in my spot, or something. And the boy played well.”

Dean’s 32-yard interception return for a touchdown when he jumped an out route by wide receiver Davante Adams in the second quarter started a run of 38 consecutive runs through Tampa Bay after the Packers led 10-0. Two passes later, Rodgers was picked up again – this one on another pitch meant for Adams, a hit that appeared to be deflected by cornerback Carlton Davis or tipped off by Adams. Regardless, it landed in the hands of security Mike Edwards.

It was only the second time in Rodgers’ career that he has thrown interceptions on consecutive first-half rides (and the first time in nearly seven years).

“The momentum decided in their favor and when we came back. Give all the credit to Tampa,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur. “The first [interception], Aaron threw with some expectation and the corner squatted all the way over and made a good play. Second, I knew we had a miscommunication out there. We weren’t in the right look. … Anyway, it probably should have timed out. Didn’t look good. Sure enough, it was turned around and picked. An important part of the game. “

Until those two throws, it looked like another Rodgers-led Green Bay masterpiece was in the works. The Packers dominated the first quarter with a field goal and a touchdown (a 1 yard run by Aaron Jones) on the first two drives. Even after it quickly turned to a 14-10 lead for Bucs, Rodgers had his chances. He missed a wide-open Marcedes Lewis for what could have been a 75-yard touchdown to kill one drive, then was fired to end the next after Jamaal Williams missed a blitz pickup.

“I don’t feel like we’ve ever gotten into a rhythm, or even the 10 points to start the game,” said Rodgers. “We had off-planned plays to keep our drives alive. They deserve the credit – they took us out of our rhythm.”

The Bucs’ swarming defense pressured Rodgers twelve times, the most anyone has gotten with Rodgers this season. Rodgers only went 2v7 for 10 yards with four sacks and a scramble when pressured. Bucs defensive coordinator, Todd Bowles, blew Rodgers 17 times, and Rodgers went 5-of-14 with two sacks and both of his interceptions. According to research from ESPN Stats & Information, it was the same for most of the blitzes he’s experienced in the past two seasons.

Rodgers finished 16-of-35 for 160 yards without a touchdown and the two interceptions before coach Matt LaFleur let Tim Boyle finish the game. Rodgers’ passer rating of 35.4 was the second lowest in a game he started and did not leave due to injury. His only worse rating was on December 14, 2014 in Buffalo (34.3).

Rodgers dropped to 1-3 against the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium, but at least he got away healthy this time.

The same cannot be said for at least one other significant member of the offense. All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari took off in the second half with a chest injury and did not return. The Packers ended the game with Rick Wagner on the left. They also finished the game without a pair of defensive starters: DT Tyler Lancaster (shoulder) and security Darnell Savage (quad).

While Bakhtiari was unable to finish the game, LaFleur said the preliminary indication is that it’s not a long-term problem.

While there is still a long way to go, this game could have ramifications down the road, especially when it comes to tiebreakers in the playoffs. Under Rodgers, the Packers have played in four NFC Championship Games. They have all been on the road. If this loss means the Packers will have to return to Tampa before the Super Bowl, they may not have to worry about where the final game of the 2020 season will be played.

“You can never really feel comfortable in this competition,” said LaFleur. “As soon as you feel comfortable, you get beaten.”
