Hornet tennis wins new Caney tournament | Huntsville Hornets
Several Huntsville Hornet tennis players won their matches at the New Caney University Tennis Tournament on Friday in New Caney.
In a group of 11 local schools, the Hornet tennis team won the New Caney tennis tournament. Seniors Nic Diaz and Ronaldo Santos won their doubles match, while junior Kendall Hoke dominated her singles match, taking first place in the tournament.
Overall, I was very pleased with the way the team fared during the tournament. We have a solid team and it was great to see them take over, said Huntsville tennis head coach John Fuller. We have a lot of work to do, but with a little practice, these children will show themselves. Kendall had a good performance in his matches and Diaz and Santos enlightened him.
Several other team members performed well in the tournament, reaching the consolation finals, including sophomores Juan Torres and Koen Dunbar. The pair were able to win their first doubles game, but fell in the second round.
"I was really happy to see so many of our players going far in the tournament," added Fuller. I would like to see us work on our consistency, but for our first games of the year, I am very happy.
On the girls' side, junior Grace Olivares and sophomore Evan Tijerina gave up their first double match, but came back strong, winning their next two games, before falling to the final. Senior Xinyao Wang and sophomore Niyah Wilson also had a solid performance, winning their first game, before being eliminated in the final. Junior Sara Schwitzer also had a good performance, finishing fourth in her singles match.
We have a lot of strong and hard-working competitors in the team, said Fuller. We are having a lot of fun and we look forward to better performances in the future.
The team will return to court Thursday for the Porter Invitational in Porter.
