Lakeland defeats North Salem for Sectioni 1 Regional Title
SHRUB EIK If things had gone like this every year since 2009, the Lakeland hockey team would have played for the state league B championship last Sunday.
But with both state and traditional Section 1 class local championships dropped due to the coronavirus, Lakeland played Class C North Salem Friday night for the newly created Putnam-Northern Westchester Small School title.
And Lakeland seemed to go after that award with all the energy and focus it typically brings to states.
The Hornets, led by Keirra Ettere’s hat-trick and two goals from Emma Fon, beaten North Salem 6-0 to win the division title.
Turning point
Lakeland set the tone early.
Very early
Fon scored just 29 seconds into the game, burying a rebound.
North Salem then managed to keep Lakeland off the scoreboard for 14 minutes and three seconds.
But with 28 seconds to go in the first quarter, Ettere scored her first of what would be between two goals on her hard backward.
When she scored from a penalty corner halfway through the second quarter, the game was essentially over.
Player of the game
A threat every time she had the ball in Lakeland’s attacking end, Ettere was the best player on the field. The senior also had an assist. She finished the season as the Hornets’ top goalscorer with 33 goals and 10 assists.
By the numbers
Mia Smith scored Lakleand’s fourth goal with 6:10 left in the first half after winning a short run for a rebound against Tiger goalkeeper Allegra Delli Carpini.
Jaden Ray, Kristen O’Shea and Fon each had an assist.
Several players had strong games for North Salem, which closed the season 11-2-2.
Among them was Delli Carpini, who had 14 innings.
Kiki DeMondna, Krista DeModna and flyer Skylar Bender – who sprinted like a track star to stop several Lakeland shots from penalty corners – had strong defensive games for North Salem.
Lakeland goalkeeper Maeve Dineen-Herzog stopped the only shot she saw.
Quotables
North Salem celebrated it as if it were a championship win after beating Croton 1-0 in the semifinals. That match, he decided, was the equivalent of winning the Northern Westchester Class C crown. That championship doesn’t exist, of course, but North Salem didn’t care. The Tigers had thought they had a good chance of winning the Section 1 Class C overall title this year.
And they knew they had little chance of defeating Lakeland.
A 6-0 score was, in a way, a decent performance against one of the state’s most elite teams.
“I’m so proud. They played so hard. … The girls really played their hearts and never gave up,” said Tiger coach Jen Frohman, who noted that in recent years when the two teams played, Lakeland often played with about 9 won. -0, when in fact you keep playing the ball away.
Frohman was particularly pleased as her team played well with only three seniors.
And she is optimistic.
About freshman Delli Carpini, she said, “She’s going to be great.”
“I’m out of words … There are so many memories,” said the senior DeModna, looking back on playing for North Salem. “We played Lakeland in the section finals. It wasn’t what we wanted, but we left everything out there.”
Referring to both hockey and the classroom, Lakeland coach Sharon Sarsen said every day was a challenge this fall.
But the work it took to make things work was worth it, she said.
“I like that they had a sense of a normal experience and were able to share a high school experience with teammates,” said Sarsen, whose team closed the season 13-1.
Fon, Ettere and O’Shea, all seniors, stayed together a bit on the field.
Fon will play for SUNY-Geneseo and Ettere for SUNY-Cortland, while O’Shea, who missed most of the season with injuries, has not yet decided whether to play in college.
But their post-game thoughts were not focused on next year, but rather on Friday’s end of their Lakeland hockey career.
“Through the roof,” said Ettere, describing her luck at winning. “We are really happy that we even got to have a season. Winning is great.
