British architecture studio Reed Watts has created a wooden clubhouse for an amateur cricket team in London’s Bushy Park, which is both modern and familiar in design.
The sports pavilion was built to provide changing facilities and social areas Teddington Cricket Club, which has been located in Bushy Park – a Royal Park next to Hampton Court Palace in Richmond upon Thames, in south-west London since 1863.
Reed Watts designed the building to replace the club’s previous clubhouse in a pair of prefabricated huts built in WWII.
The studio wanted the new Teddington Cricket Club pavilion to reference these former buildings and respect the scenic location in the Royal Park.
“The core concept fulfilled the dual mission of club and land owner to create a discreet yet recognizable building that preserves the beautiful surroundings of the Bushy Park, while doubling the floor space of the current club building,” explains Reed Watts’ co-founder Jim Reed, who describes himself as a local and “reluctant part-time cricket player” who is often roped into playing for the team.
“We wanted to design a decidedly modern structure, but also one that created a sense of familiarity that would put users and park visitors at ease,” he told Dezeen.
“The new building works better for spectators and players alike, offering better views and facilities while referring to the shape of the previous clubhouse, formed of two Nissen huts.”
The clubhouse consists of two black sloping roof structures – one with a clock and the other with a scoreboard – connected by a flat roof section clad in natural colored wood.
“We kept the shape simple, with few decorations,” said Reed. “The focus is on the activity, in this case cricket – the players, referees, clock and scoreboard.”
“These are easily discernible against the pavilion’s tranquil wooden backdrop,” he added. “It is known without pastiche.”
The central area, along with the smaller sloping roof structure, contains the club’s public areas, designed to be used by the local community.
This block contains a bar and cafe with large windows overlooking the field, as well as restrooms, the club office and the jury table. A roof terrace on top of the flat roof provides additional viewing space for spectators.
The second sloped-roof block contains four hanging rooms for players and one for game officials, as well as storage areas for equipment.
The structure combines a wooden frame with a structurally insulated panel (SIP) system of walls made of wood, and is clad with larch colored black for the pitched roof structures.
It also has a geothermal heat pump, water storage tanks and green roofs that help reduce the building’s environmental impact.
According to the studio, this wooden finish is designed to soften the look of the building in the park.
“Finding a suitable language to respond to Bushy Park’s mature landscape was key,” explains Reed.
“The strong shape of the clubhouse is softened by the Siberian larch cladding, which helps to nestle the building against the backdrop of mature trees,” he continued. “The L-shaped plan also covers the double cricket fields – with each flank facing one field – and is used to hide the training nets at the rear.”
Overall, Reed Watts wanted to create a building that was modern, but still clearly recognizable as a cricket clubhouse.
“There seemed to be an expectation that new pavilions would be reproductions of Edwardian buildings with little or no sense of place,” said Reed.
“Before we got involved, this was what the club envisioned – white render, red tiles and a dovecote – a common typology,” he continued.
“We didn’t think this represented the club’s ambitions or values and certainly did little to address the landscaping setting. While the new building hints at historic forms, the layout and minimal detailing are decidedly modern.”
London-based architecture studio Reed Watts was founded in 2015 by Reed and Matt Watts. The studio previously designed a set of wooden-paneled modular sleeping capsules as temporary accommodation for London homeless people.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
