The committee analyzed and assessed the performance of the Pakistan national cricket team over the past 16 months
The first meeting of the PCB Cricket Committee of the year was held in Lahore under the chairmanship of former Test wicket-keeper Saleem Yousuf. Umar Gul and Wasim Akram participated in the session online, while Urooj Mumtaz attended the meeting at Gaddafi Stadium. PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan and Director – International Cricket, Zakir Khan also participated as ex officio members.
The following are the results of the meeting:
Pakistani men’s national cricket team performance
The committee analyzed and assessed the performance of the Pakistan national cricket team over the past 16 months, in which the team played 10 tests (two won and five lost), five ODIs (four won) and 17 T20Is (seven won and eight lost).
Pakistani head coach Misbahul Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis also attended the session by special invitation and provided their feedback and input to the committee. Prior to their participation, newly appointed chief selector Muhammad Wasim also informed the committee about his selection policy.
While the PCB Cricket Committee expressed displeasure with the squad’s performance, it acknowledged that the team had participated in the unprecedented and challenging Covid-19 conditions, resulting in the absence of a few experienced players who in turn contributed to the overall underperformance.
The PCB Cricket Committee unanimously agreed that backroom staff needed to provide absolute clarity about their collective strategy and approach so that they could be evaluated and judged against those objectives at the next meeting.
The committee also recommended that the PCB continue to support and support team management, while suggesting that the next performance review should be conducted after the home games against South Africa.
Saleem Yousuf, Chairman of the PCB Cricket Commission: “The PCB Cricket Commission has conducted a holistic yet constructive, fact-based and objective assessment of the Pakistan men’s cricket team over the past 16 months. There is no denying that we all want to see our side in the top three or four cricket-playing countries and our recent performances do not live up to those expectations, nor the talent we boast.
“Nevertheless, we also have to consider a number of other factors and the committee considered that cricket was one of the biggest contributors to the squad’s dismal performance during the Covid-19 pandemic. The challenges of playing in the Covid-19 protocols have been faced not only by the Pakistan national men’s team, but by all the parties currently involved in international cricket, and these concerns have been raised regularly by the team coaches and elite cricket players.
“All professional and high-performing athletes need an environment in which they can optimally prepare for the international stage, which was not the case on the last two tours and certainly not on the last tour where players were locked in their room for two. weeks due to the policy of that particular Covid-free country.
As a result, Babar Azam, Imam-ul-Haq and Shadab Khan were not available for test selections after Fakhar Zaman missed the flight on the day of departure. These big losses affected the team combinations which in turn resulted in the overall underperformance of the squad against a side that remained unbeaten for the past two and a half years.
Despite these drawbacks, the PCB Cricket Committee strongly believes that team selections and the choice of players in the lineups should have been better. The committee also believes that more scientific and data-based work is needed for the players with improved communication to not only prepare them for the bigger challenges, but also identify players who can support their performance with other skill trades in a highly competitive environment on a consistent basis.
“With the major home series against South Africa only two weeks away, the PCB Cricket Committee will re-evaluate after the same. However, team management has already been informed that there will be no points for second place. ”
Zakir Khan, Director – International, has informed the PCB Cricket Committee of the Pakistan cricket team’s commitments for the calendar year 2021, which will begin with the home game against South Africa.
Zakir Khan has informed the committee that all arrangements have been made for the appropriate delivery of the series in a difficult and challenging bio-safe environment. The committee has been informed that fans are not allowed in due to government restrictions.
Apart from the series against South Africa, other events in the 2021 calendar year include the Pakistan tour to South Africa, Zimbabwe, England, the West Indies and Afghanistan, and home games against New Zealand, England and the West Indies with the Asia Cup T20 and ICC. World Cup T20 scheduled in the second and last quarter of the year.
Cricket for women
The PCB Cricket Committee complimented the women’s wing for organizing and planning international series against South Africa and England, indicating that despite the dire pandemic situation, women’s cricket was firmly on PCB’s radar. The committee also congratulated Bismah Maroof and her challengers for successfully defending the National Triangular T20 Women’s Cricket Championship trophy in December 2020.
The Committee recommended that regardless of how the series in South Africa goes, focus should not deviate from women’s cricket and that all possible support and assistance should be provided on the side to enable them to perform strongly in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2021 and progress to next year’s event in New Zealand.
PCB domestic cricket 2020-21
PCB General Manager – Domestic Cricket, Junaid Zia, gave a presentation on the National High Performance Center and PCB’s 2020-21 domestic season. He informed the panel that 255 domestic contracted players appeared in 185 matches from eight events between September 30, 2020 and January 5, 2021, with the Pakistan Cup One-Day Tournament currently underway in Karachi.
The PCB Cricket Committee welcomed the involvement of over 50 recently retired international stars in various coaching roles in the High Performance division. The committee expressed the hope that these coaches will not only work to track down, identify and develop talented cricket players, but also work extensively with current players to help them rectify their technical shortcomings and regain their forms.
The PCB Cricket Committee recognized that through the efforts and hard work of the High Performance Department, Pakistan was able to demonstrate to the world that cricket and Covid-19 can co-exist with proper safety precautions. The PCB has already conducted 3,750 tests on all participants, including players and match officials, during the current season.
The committee welcomed the quality and competitive cricket played in the domestic leagues, and noted the improved and impressive success rates in the National T20 Cup, as well as individual performances and results in the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
The committee advised that the High Performance department should continue to focus on improving the standard of referees, pitches and other player facilities. The committee also suggested using cricket balls of the same brand for all events and sizes, so that the gap between the first and second XI sides and the players can be further narrowed.
