Michigan high school basketball delayed due to ‘contactless sport’ decree
There will be some shuffling on the schedule for the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
Following Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s announcement on Wednesday, eliminating indoor fitness classes and some non-contact this weekendthe MHSAA has released new information on how they are moving forward with winter sports.
Basketball, wrestling, hockey, and competitive cheer for boys and girls can begin non-contact practice on Saturday. It is expected to start matches for these sports on February 1.
The MHSAA said it will adjust state tournament schedules for these sports and announce new dates later this week.
Competition for boys who swim and dive, girls who swim and dive in the Upper Peninsula, gymnastics, bowling for boys and girls and stays on track. The swimming and diving starts on January 22nd and the other sports on January 25th.
Athletes must wear masks, except when actively participating in the pool or gymnastics. Fans, who must be no more than 100 people in a school gym or 250 in stadiums, must follow the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ social distance guidelines.

Two other winter sports, boys and girls skiing, have been in competition since December.
The state volleyball semifinals and finals, the girls’ swim and dive finals in the Lower Peninsula, the eight-man finals for football and the 11-man semifinals are this weekend. Those student athletes are enrolled in the state’s rapid testing program.
