Shoot down Tresidder!
Most schools offer a welcoming central hub teeming with cafes and common areas where students can study, dine and socialize. Old Union and Tresidder, unfortunately, do not fit the bill.
The supposed Stanford campus is crowded with greasy 60s-style tables and couches below. Few students see Tresidder as the lively R&DE meeting place makes it is to be.
Stanford is home to some of the most innovative spaces and buildings in the country, but in the heart of the campus is an obsolete and depressing complex. Old Union is not at all conducive to a lively social scene with its bright lighting, uninviting study spaces and mediocre restaurants. It also lacks affordable entertainment options like billiards, video games, or table tennis.
The few places that accept meal plan dollars, The Ax & Palm and Decadence, barely count as good restaurants. Most Stanford students go to the dining rooms, their townhouses or Coupa to eat and socialize, only stopping by Tresidder to run a race or make a quick purchase.
On the other hand, the courtyard of the Graduate School of Business (GSB) is an architectural delight, with sloping lawns, a high-quality cafeteria, patio tables in the sun and shaded picnic benches. Likewise, Harvard recently finished the state-of-the-art Smith Campus Center, which houses spacious rooms with natural light, a roof garden and a myriad of couches and tables for formal studies and informal meeting places.
Tresidder and Old Union are in a sorry state by comparison.
Fortunately for us, Stanford is trying to remake Tresidder through the "Stanford Town Center Vision" plan and invites students to give their opinion. First, I recommend that Stanford completely reorganize Old Union by knocking down the buildings so that there is enough space to create a cohesive environment for the center of the campus.
I encourage university planners to draw inspiration from architecturally appealing campus centers such as the GSB courtyard and the Harvards Smith Campus Center to create a vibrant place where undergraduates can meet and come together for informal meetings, relaxation and collaboration.
There has been talk of alleviating the need to leave campus for shopping; I strongly suggest having convenience stores that replace the need to go to CVS or Walgreens. I hope for a variety of dining experiences on the downtown campus, be it take-out lunches, sit-down cafes or grocery stores like Munger but more expansive. In the vision document, they note their plan for a 15,000 to 30,000 square foot grocery store similar to Trader Joes.
I look forward to the moment when Tresidder is truly a place where you can meet someone new, vision document describes it. I really hope that LMN Architects, a company known for its success in urban planning, will transform this promising part of the campus.
The universities are planning to renovate the White Plaza and build a downtown that could improve the social life of the campus and build a better community. This would increase the number of interactions between students from different social circles and make this huge campus smaller and much closer.
There are many possibilities for rethinking the future of university student life, starting with a student center. I'm delighted to see these plans come to fruition and the space is appreciated by Stanford students. Lets update the parts of the campus that have been left behind!
