College football using the wait-and-see approach
With each passing of another pandemic, we are a little closer to not having university football in 2020. At least not as we know it.
Don’t shoot the messenger. It’s just a fact that without vaccination against COVID-19, life goes on as we know it now.
Which means that people hoard toilet paper, which is not essential for those who get coronavirus.
Seriously, not that an undue shortage of TP is not serious, last week, the college football qualifying committee met with vice president Mike Pence via teleconference, and their message was clear.
No students on campus. No college football on campus.
To do otherwise would make college football a training ground for the NFL, only without players being paid.
It was a bold position, especially since Pence’s boss, President Donald Trump, is in favor of college football this fall.
Admittedly, there are still more than 4 and a half months before the start of the football season and a lot could happen.
There could be a vaccination discovered and the world saved for now.
In the meantime, prepare to learn a new sporting expression, “force majeure event”.
It means an unforeseeable circumstance, such as a pandemic or hurricane that prevented Miami from playing Arkansas State a few years ago.
The force majeure event is in the NBA collective bargaining agreement, and next month NBA wages will be cut by 25%.
Meanwhile, schools like Michigan will be checking their contracts with schools like Arkansas State, which is slated to visit Ann Arbor on September 19 in exchange for nearly $ 2 million.
The ASU cannot afford to lose $ 2 million.
