COLLEGE STATION, Texas Under a beautiful sunset in Central Texas, the # 20 Texas A&M women’s tennis team took a solid 4-1 win against the Missouri Tigers on Thursday night at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. With the win, Texas A&M improves to 14-5 with a 6-3 record in Southeastern Conference games. In defeat, Missouri drops to 15-14 with a 1-11 SEC mark.

After dropping the doubles, the Maroon & White regrouped and took up four singles courts on their way to their eighth win at home this year. Jayci Goldsmith got things started with an even 6-3, 6-2 win over Ellie Wright’s lane two to level the match at 1-1. Dorthea Faa-Hviding gave the Aggies their first lead after her 7-5, 6-0 win on court four against Valentina Vasquez Pongruber. Riley McQuaid put A&M at 3-1 after a 6-4, 6-1 outing against Marta Oliveira, and Renee McBryde sealed the win on lane five in a 6-4, 6-3 affair against Elys Ventura. Katya Townsend and No. 22 Tatiana Makarova were each locked in a fight in the third set, but their matches went unfinished after the match ended.

Missouri took the lone run in the doubles competition, with Bronte Murgett and Oliveira at number 69, beating A & Ms No. 70 duo Makarova and Goldsmith. The Tigers secured the point on lane two as Gabby Goldin and Serena Nash defeated the Aggie pair of McBryde and Faa-Hviding. The third match in the doubles with Townsend and McQuaid against Vasquez Pongruber and Cardenas Rifka was not over.

McBryde kept popping up in clutch moments, recording her seventh clinching win of the 2021 season and sixth in the SEC regular season. The Wollongong, Australian singles appearances account for half of this year’s Aggies wins and every Southeastern Conference competition win. McBrydes’ overall record in singles now stands at 14-3 with an unbeaten 7-0 record on the number 5 line.

Looking ahead to the teams’ upcoming game against Arkansas, the Aggies will honor the two team members in the 2021 Fightin Texas Aggie Class with a senior party on Saturday. McQuaid and Faa-Hviding, Texas A & M’s pair of graduating seniors, each taking first and second place on the team in singles victories, with Tustin, California-born McQuaid leading the way with a 77-33 career record in the Maroon & White. Fans are encouraged to come to the Mitchell Tennis Center early to take part in the festivities.

NEXT ONE

Texas A&M will remain at its home courts this weekend as the Aggies host the ## ranked Arkansas Razorbacks in a 12-hour first serve Saturday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

Head Coach Mark Weaver

On the reaction of the teams after doubles

The team reacted very well after the doubles. We definitely need to find ways to improve our doubles game, and that will be the focus of our training tomorrow. We will be ready to go against Arkansas. As for singles, we looked pretty good on all six courts. We played our games and our tennis styles, and we really put it into the singles matches.

About Renee McBrydes’ tendency to score SEC matches

She’s just the clinch win queen there. That was her sixth win in a row in the clinch, and to be honest, it’s going to be hard to keep up. I love the level of confidence she’s playing with, and she’s done a great job this season of stepping up when it’s time to perform. She knows she gets it every time she comes up to play, and that’s the kind of mindset we’re looking for in everyone on the team.

Junior Renee McBryde

When recording multiple consecutive clinch wins

It’s just a crazy coincidence. It’s great, of course, but a lot of that great feeling comes from our team doing such a good job. I wouldn’t be in a position to win games if it wasn’t for the rest of the team. We all work so well together, and we all encourage each other. I think someone has to push the team across the finish line, and today I was.
