Philadelphia Flyers Deadline: Flyers exchange Erik Gustafsson to Montreal
It was starting to look like the Philadelphia Flyers weren’t going to trade by this year’s deadline. However, in the minutes leading up to the 3 p.m. deadline, the Flyers sent defender Erik Gustafsson to the Montreal Canadiens for a 7th round design pick from 2022.
Gustafsson, who signed a one-year contract worth $ 3,000,000 in the off-season, had fallen out of favor with the Flyers and was a healthy scratch in eight of the teams’ previous nine games. The Flyers kept 50 percent of his remaining cap hit, which is really no big deal considering the contract expires at the end of the season.
After kicking off the power play in the first week of the season, Gustafsson never seemed to settle into the Flyers system, and the writing had been on the wall for a while; the Flyers and Gustafsson were no longer a match. For Montreal, they add depth for essentially nothing after losing Victor Mete on waivers earlier. And so the tradition of the Flyers acquiring Montreal’s seventh-round draft pick continues.
Update (4/12/21 4:13 PM): The tradition does not furthermore, it is the St. Louis Blues 2022 seventh round draft pick.
Gustafsson appeared in 24 games with the Flyers, scoring a goal and getting nine assists.
