Google Maps significantly expands its mass transit crowd reporting service
Expanded / crowded trains and buses have never been exactly popular. New upgrades to Google Maps may help users dodge crowds more effectively.
Today, Google announced a major enhancement to its ability to pre-warn users about congested mass transit. Originally launched in June 2019, this feature used user-reported data similar to Wazeto to cover and predict crowded trains and buses in nearly 200 cities around the world. According to today’s announcement, Google is expanding its initial deployment in its 200 cities to more than 10,000 modes of transportation in 100 countries (eventually).
Not surprisingly, Google Maps’ mass transit forecasts do not rely solely on data reported directly by users. They utilize AI models trained on that data.
“We will apply world-class anonymization and differential privacy technologies to location history data to ensure the privacy and security of our data,” the announcement said, but attempts to anonymize location data failed. It should be pointed out that there are many things to do.
