Google has teamed up with Mount Sinai Hospital in New York to develop a system that uses Nest cameras to monitor patients with coronavirus.

Starting this week, more than 100 hospital rooms will be equipped with two Nest cameras. One camera will be used to communicate with patients, while the other will monitor their vital signs. The video from Nest cameras will then be streamed live on a console at the Mount Sinai Nurse Station to help healthcare workers save time and use personal protective equipment, or PPE.

“We needed to find a way to give caregivers the ability to check and communicate with patients, which could complement in-person checks, also helping reduce the use of PPE,” wrote working nurse Robbie Freeman at Mount Sinai, in a blog article on Monday. “Every minute saved through remote patient monitoring can be offered to help another person in need.”

Mount Sinai is the first hospital to team up with Google, but the search giant has said it plans to provide 10,000 specially designed Nest Cam cameras to monitor patients in hospitals across the country.

Google has also helped aid coronaviruses in recent months by partnering with Apple to develop contact finder applications and pledging $ 800 million to help small businesses and crisis responders.
