Oppo is reportedly developing its own chip for flagship phones

According to a Nikkei report, Oppo is developing its own high-end chip for flagship mobile phones. The two spoke to the newspaper said they plan to release a custom SoC in 2023 or 2024, depending on the speed of development. Oppo reportedly wants to use TSMC’s advanced 3nm process technology for its chips.

Once the plan is realized, Oppo will be the latest leading smartphone maker to manage its own SoC designs. Yesterday, Google launched the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. This is the first smartphone with a custom SoC called Tensor. Apple and Samsung have also designed their own smartphone chips, as did Huawei before US sanctions destroyed the mobile business.

Oppo is currently using Qualcomm and MediaTek chips, like all other Chinese smartphone vendors, since Huawei’s crackdown. Xiaomi designed and released a low-end SoC called the Surge S1 for budget Mi5C phones in 2017, but since then, chip design efforts have been limited to secondary components such as image-signal processors.

Qualcomm stripped naked in a salty Google subtweet last week, so if a big company like Oppo were to undertake their own SoC design, it would lose. According to IDC, Oppo is the world’s fourth-largest smartphone maker in terms of shipments and shares ownership with the supply chain with Vivo, Realme and OnePlus, so Oppo-developed chips can be used in multiple brands of mobile phones.
