This new font breaks the big, implicit rules of typefaces

In the world of type design, most fonts and typefaces you see fall into one of two camps. Either a line or a sans-serif. The lines (Times New Roman, Georgia, Garamond, etc.) are classic and have additional hooks and curves at the end of the letters for readability and style. Sans serifs (Helvetica, Futura, Roboto, etc.) are modernists, in the form of letters based on simpler geometry, with no extra prosperity.
[Image: courtesy Noël Leu]There is no law declaring that all typefaces must be classified in either serif or sans-serif buckets, but we still classify them all in the same way.
[Image: courtesy Noël Leu]A new font called GT Ultra is different. It’s half a line and half a sans serif. That’s what AIGA calls the “real fencesitter of typefaces.” And what do you know? That’s right, and it’s great.
“This project was born out of a desire to explore the possibility of finding aesthetics that cannot be easily classified,” says designer Noel Roy. “We are all habitual creatures and tend to be accustomed to something that can be clearly identified.”
[Image: courtesy Noël Leu]You can see that GT Ultra is inspired by the rich typefaces of the 1970s and 80s. These typefaces were hand-painted typefaces filled with all the thick curves of Doc Martin’s shoes. As we saw in projects like Burger King’s recent rebranding, such retro typefaces have definitely revived in the last few years. But GT Ultra is more than just a retro remake.
[Image: courtesy Noël Leu]Leu spent four years developing the GT Ultra to produce the anachronistic effect he was looking for. “I really took the time to rest the project and think about where to bring the concept and design,” he says.
[Image: courtesy Noël Leu]On the one hand, it has all the winding elements of hand-painted calligraphy. (Have you ever seen a gorgeous printed letter like the lowercase “a”? It may have been designed by Bacchus himself.) On the other hand, he is a modernist with a button. Pay particular attention to the terminals when looking at the typeface. These are the ends of the letters. Sometimes Leu ends them with flared chips to lighten the weight of the letters, like the rudder of an airplane. Leu also ends them with square edges and places them firmly on the page like a trusted sans serif.
[Image: courtesy Noël Leu]But the main reason GT Ultra works as a functional font is, as Leu admits, the latest technology. Variable font technology (a super-sized font file co-developed by Google, Apple, Microsoft and Adobe in 2016) stores far more information about individual glyphs than older font files. This allows designers to not only greatly magnify the geometry, but basically program the font. Or small, but optimize its bits and pieces for a constant visual balance. For fonts that push the boundaries of thin and thick areas, sharp corners, and curved edges, additional levels of control were essential for proper rendering. In addition, this additional code is a version that makes the font lighter, bolder, more geometric contrast, and pushes the visual identity to the limit.
[Image: courtesy Noël Leu]In the meantime, what do you call GT Ultra? Is it a line or a sans line? .. .. is there anything else? “I don’t think GT Ultra is a Sands typeface or a serif typeface,” Leu says, throwing coal into the fire. “But it’s also a typeface for both sans and serif.”
