The sound around white noise on Google Home and Nest Hub changes

People like to use the Google Assistant’s smart display and speakers to play white noise before going to bed. Google changed the sound around white noise earlier this week and was flooded with complaints from Home / Nest users.

The first report of this new sound caused by “Hey Google, Playing White Noise” appeared on Wednesday. As of today, this updated ambient sound is fully open to all users.

Many complain that the new white noise is “much quieter” and “muffled”, but notices that it loops every 10 minutes instead of every hour. (If you don’t disable it with the sleep timer, you can play the ambient sound for 12 hours. The 2nd generation Nest Hub has a clean auto-off feature that automatically turns it off when you fall asleep.)

There are nearly 100 complaints between the Google Nest Community thread and Reddit. One user uploaded the original version to Google Drive. Casting is an option when uploading that file to YouTube Music, but most users want at least Google to give the assistant the option to request the original version. You can leave feedback on this white noise change in the Google Home app or on the web.
